Currently, users can only choose to recieve DMs from people whom they either share a guild with or are friends with. This causes problems as in many cases, people often:
- Are unable to join a mutual server
- Do not know a mutual server to join
Whilst sending a friend request:
- Takes far too long; you have to send the request, wait for the reciever to come online to accept, then be back online to send the message, then they have to be online to recieve
- Is not always appropriate; many people are sensitive or clean about their friends lists
I do not think allowing DMs from all users should necessarily be default, as it could cause spam and scam messages to become easier to send, however it would be incredibly useful to many as an option. DM creation, reactions and message edits/deletes can already be made so I don't see how there would be a problem on Discord's side allowing this.
