A Need for Viewing all Server Message History
Hi, my name is Kara and I hold concern of some pressing issues as to how discord currently approaches deletion of channels, servers and messages.
I write this from having had my server that originally had been called Reformation (a server aimed towards societal reform and support in coming about changes in our society) been invaded by an unwelcome bot that had been granted access from a user whom one of my mods had appointed position as an admin as to. It is my mistake for not making it incessantly clear that mods are not to give higher access to other people, yet I presumed they would of this know, and it never came to mind of how someone could think they are entitled to give that role to others. The bot, called "Darwin" had deleted entirety of all messages throughout all channels, as well as all there channels aside from what I called "casual chat", which yes, even all messages within that had wiped from.
Some very important information has been lost. It is as if a house you've built caught fire and disintegrated to nothing but a mere stump, merely the people who have had patience to put up with this mishap remain, and the server roles were untouched. It is equivalent to a sand castle, an intricately design one that had taken much time and been up for awhile, suddenly be knocked down. By a foolish bystander who just thought it would be a fun game to be at its knocking. I have lost things that I had been working on and had not yet fully formulated but was in works of developing and was going to make them into systems and eventually, copyright them, I and some of my members lost access to dreams we had shared and I interpreted them, which I think it is pivotal to be able to have record of what you dream about when asleep as to provide psychological insights that can embark upon growth and recovery, and as well, visions for what can be done about our pernicious society in this now.
All that now is left, is a crushed castle, fragments remain to deface what once was and what was standing to build higher to societal growth.
The difference though, is that there could be a restoration of said lost content. Just, there is no option as to the viewing of entirety of server history. Audit logs does not even show message history, which perhaps it would be too long, but what can implement is an option and log to view all content on server, even deleted. Forgive me if this sounds foolish, for I know nothing about tech. But I believe there must be way to view things, as discord most certainly would need grant access to necessary authorities in case of a crime, which matter of fact, a few weeks prior to this recent happening, a user repeatedly insisted I commit suicide and had told me and others they intend upon raping me, and they had tried posing themselves as me, which failed because we have differences in the tag.
I can think of many ways in which this not granting access to retrieve, or at least view deleted things can harm others, as well in general, society. I also can think of why it is irresponsible to expect mods as well, server owners to ensure all are equipped at all times to make most responsible decisions on behalf of a server. I will start with the latter point first.
You cannot always anticipate how someone will act, even if you well know of them. Most people who met online also do not in real life know one another, and so you do not fully know true colors of someone when making them a mod. You have someone as myself, an autistic (yes diagnosed) recluse, who has traumatic history as well abuse, and who is unable to make real life friends with ease.. Most people who come online, I even can argue, are looking to make friends because they lack of real life connection and are looking to connect and feel a charge that is belonging. Sure, it is not discord's responsibility to settle this or account for what majority is, it is their own company, but to at least factor this in, when a great deal of its consumers will be in this way, would make it a more community-friendly platform which always will draw more attention and as well, investment (usage, financial, etc). I had tried looking up the age demographics of discord and had found nothing.. Whilst I cannot be with certainty, it is my guess that most users lie between teens and the early twenties, my own range of age. I do not want make excuses or say it is sole on the discord company, because it is not. But discord need be aware that if they are going to make a community aimed at people who can be in its usage as young as thirteen, that a thirteen year old (as well as most people younger than around twenty-five or so) are not often informed enough, as well as psychologically equipped to make of most responsible decisions.
McCarthy Woods leads the Tavistock Centre’s adolescent and young adult service, which sees patients from between the ages of 14 and 25. “Adolescence is much more fluid than the boundary between CAMHS and AMHS suggests,” she says. “It’s not binary. We are very aware that adolescence doesn’t end at 18.”
Not being as able to anticipate consequential action or think of the future will inevitably lead to many impulsivity-driven decisions, including deletion of a server or its channels-- not thinking about the future, not thinking about how it can be impacting of others..
My drive to change society is the only reason why I live. When my server was tore down, it was as if apart of me died.. I weeped on off for more than 6 hours and cried the next day endlessly, as well. It even had made me suicidal, but that is not anyone's fault, that is reflective of my own mental health, which is not anyone else's accountability. I am sure the guy who had deleted my channels did not think about how it would like this, impact me.
Returning to my point of how you cannot always be within a predictability of how others will behave... There are many things that can arise; a sibling getting into a shared computer where someone just happens to one day, not log out of their own account, a break up can happen, a fight.. *Discord* can come about. A teenager going through vast hormonal shift may not well think and out of impulsive urge, commit the atrocity. It can remedy through only managing server your own self, but it can be quite cumbersome, especially if you preoccupy with other life matters, which maybe then you should not have a discord, but if that were so, no one would be having a discord, because most everyone has world things for doing.
If you are going to have a platform that does not recognize the potential pitfalls that can come about from those using it, it is a flawed design. I think discord is in general great, but my complaint here is that unrealistic absurdity in where you cannot retrieve or at very least, view means of things that can by complete accident or by malicious intent of others, be lost. Even, a computer or phone can glitch and all that had been worked upon, is lost.
I can think of many things where it can even be a safety hazard; both for individuals and for transformation of society as a whole; you can have an instance where as in my own self, a user harasses you and if you need show law enforcement and they end up deleting it right away. The evidence for serious harassment or criminal offenses will not be able to suffice for a show, if discord is not fast enough in a response and the danger can be an immediate pressing... You can have un-copyrighted material (which yes, would then be a choice and upon accountability of the sharer, it is not discord's liability, but still, this is an issue of ethics) and potential ideas that can greatly influence out society-- and lost also is the ability as for impact. Documentation of trauma and abuse evidence that can stand as important for law enforcement that is wiped is no longer immediately accessible which can lead to endangerment, law enforcement not seriously as taking victims with a thereof lack of evidence.. Things that support someone-- may be all that they have to see someone cares and so they they succumb furthermore, suicidal. These endangerments can mitigate through an allowance for accessing a complete content history in server settings at minimum (if it is possibility), or alternatively, having a restoration option.

There are probably many more cases, but I need not flood them. I am sorry if this post feels or is seemingly foolish, but I think it is fair and stands so, when you cannot always discern of what will happen, and it is not fair to be unable to be blamed fully with what is not predictable. Someone can perhaps argue a server owner be made more aware of potential pitfalls and happenings as this, but even so, you still cannot always control what will happen.

Hey, I also believe in writing a "long" post to express your conserves and bring forward your points. I do this too, I can't help myself, I like writing in detail. It is not foolish at all, instead, it means you actually mean what you write which many people fail to understand and/or won't even bother.
I have experienced many server raids in the past, all the work and effort that was put in; seeing all destroyed makes me sad and angry. It feels bad having everything gone, most of the time fast overnight when you've gone to sleep happily.
Discord, growing and becoming more formal to cash in in more areas should provide more tools as it is trying to enlarge its userbase. I also find it frustrating that NO discord action can be reversed and everything gone is completely gone.
About the lack of evidence support and future keeping in the discord ecosystem. Over the years of using discord, I also saw abuse happening. There was a guy and another guy with mental difficulties (I'll call him Sticks). The abuser kept telling Sticks to commit suicide and a lot of other awful things. The abuser would also spread lies and rumours to further hurt Sticks. The abuser also straight-up threatened Sticks and everyone else in the server at the time. I wrote a report to discord and got others to do so too but the response of "The message was deleted" is annoying as F*CK. Discord did nothing in that case and seems like you've done research to know a lot of this happen on the discord platform; many types of abuse. If discord wants to grow up then it should also mature in platform safety as well.
About the "un-copyrighted material", just to say any work made is automatically copyrighted. You make it its yours (discord allowing others to steal it is another thing) but your work is still copyrighted.
If you want, send me a friend request at AliTheKing#9129 and we can talk about ways to prevent server data loss and messages (and for the messages part discord might get mad, smh, but still DM me).1
