Regarding DM message history

Kinda a weird question here but we were debating this tonight, so:

If someone has been logged out for a while and has been receiving DMs during that time, when they log back in and check a certain user's DMs do they start where they left off or are they shown the last messages that were sent chronologically (so scrolled all the way to the "bottom" if you will)?
