Re: Rumored Etherium/NFT Integration
If anyone from Discord's actually reading these, hi there! I'm sure you've noticed by now that the support forum has been consumed by a tidal wave of anti-crypto/anti-NFT comments. Many of them mention cancelling nitro subscriptions and/or leaving for another platform like Skype. I'm adding my voice to that crowd. In my personal opinion, NFTs and cryptocurrency are a solution looking for a problem. They don't seem to do much of anything helpful, and some are actively harmful, eating up large amounts of electricity and resulting in the production of a lot of e-waste due to computationally intensive mining processes. I highly suspect the only reasons they're popular are because they're novel and because a few e-celebs have been hard at work selling the idea of crypto to their fans so they can make money off of them with pump-and-dump schemes and the like.
Eventually, I think people are going to pick up on the idea that this is a market driven by pure speculation and nothing else. Discord might make some money in the short term while the market's still growing, but when that bubble pops, all that new traffic the addition drew in will dry up. Worse, many of Discord's most frequent current users, the ones in the know enough to have heard these rumors, will have left out of protest. If this becomes a big story on, say, Twitter, even more infrequent users might consider a boycott. If the people at the top really are seriously considering crypto/NFT integration, I think they should think long and hard about what they want Discord to be. If they want it to be a passing fad and nothing more, so be it. Go right ahead. If they want it to be a permanent fixture of the internet landscape the way Twitter or Facebook are, I think they might want to reconsider.
