NFT Integration
As one of the many people who have supported discord from the start this would be a absolute slap in the face to a massive majority of your userbase. The harm NFT's cause to the environment is completely unnecessary and wasteful. There is no gain or benefit to something like this. The only thing it would do is promote a very harmful activity for the gain and entertainment of very few. And its something that is entirely unneeded for a social messaging program. The only thing this would do is serve to further harm this programs reputation and relationship with its userbase.

All this hate against NFTs and you don't even understand what you are fighting against.
The environmental concern is literally going away in a matter of months, and the potential freedom and financial security ethereum can provide are unlike anything else in existence.

Potential freedom from what. The days when cryptocurrency was untraceable ended the week people on social media started advertising it as untraceable, because it turns out that advertising that you are doing crimes is a bad idea. The days when it was taxed less are also ending. The environmental concern is absolutely not ending, people have been making your "a few months" claim for at least 3 years and the fiscal incentives not to actually fix shit haven't changed. The financial security is nonexistent because it is a volatile asset subject to severe price fluctuations, and without it serving a genuine human need there is no way to stabilise - nobody is going to rent your jpeg for a few months to let you recover being hit by the wrong end of greater fool economics, nor can anything useful be scavenged from it. My hatred of blockchain technology is deeply rooted in my understanding of it.

But i do think it might be enlightening to hear exactly what it is you hope to be free from.

"going away in a matter of months" it will do so much damage in a matter of months. You know theres an envrionmental concern, you know that but dont care, that proves the kind of people you are. There is no freedom, there is no finacial security, its all a scam thats rewarding a few for destroying the environment, I didn't know morals had a price but you've proven me wrong.

@Cormorants lol, thanks for the thoughtful reply, your last comment made me smile.
Ok, so, I'm not too concerned about the traceability, there's some nuance there but I'm not doing anything illegal so it's whatever.
Taxes, ya not trying to avoid the irs either, that's a quick way to go straight to jail.
The merge taking forever, yep, hear ya there, it sucks, technology is hard, hopefully it comes soon. I listen to all the weekly dev zoom calls and it is coming along, they've made a lot of progress, but they are also being very conservative. Idk what to say, feel ya there.
The financial stability, ya, crazy market. As the market gets bigger it will become more stable, just like penny stocks vs the Dow, the more money involved the harder it is to move and the more stable it becomes.
Ok, now to the fun part. The freedom part. So, right now, your money is held by someone else, some corporate entity. Your 401k, held by a brokerage. Your mortgage and title, held elsewhere. Maybe you own your car and have the title, but that can be stolen a lot easier than crypto keys. The first layer of the "freedom" I'm talking about is being your own bank. And, let me get this out of the way upfront, I'm talking about operating on layer 2s, not directly on Ethereum, just to be clear. So, you are your own bank, cool, no one can mess with your money but you. Well how often did people mess with your money before, not much, maybe some identity theft, maybe you got double charged a while ago at a gas station, not that big of a deal. Well, imagine if you were, idk, a political threat or activist. Now you might have some troubles, some big company, like Exxon, tries to sue you, or accuses you of corporate espionage, your bank freezes your accounts, and now you are SOL. Ok, you see where I'm getting at there, let's move on.
A lot of our laws are "up to interpretation" from the courts, well, code isn't. Everyone plays by the same, public, rules. There aren't favorites, there is no paying someone off, no election fraud. More of a "let's live in a free and functioning society" than the current mess we are in now.
Ok, I'm getting tired, I gotta sign off, I hope I was at least not causing trouble. There's a lot of bullshit in crypto, money's involved, there's shitty actors in the world, it sucks, but at the core we really are trying to help. Take care

I'm going to have to disagree regarding being your own bank - there are different risks, not lesser risks. Volatility is obviously one, as is the fact cryptocurrency is generally not actually useful as a currency for buying material goods in the world we live in, and diversifying into multiple currencies to mitigate the matter of volatility makes the second problem worse, to say nothing of the fact that a "bank" or collection of banks with zero regulations can screw you just as easily as a state controlled bank with fewer parties having to agree to the decision to make it happen. Outside of that, having studied economics and the history of economics - a community can be their own bank, an individual cannot. The mechanisms for a community to be their own bank existed before blockchain, and while modern credit unions aren't what they were, building something new on a foundation without the many problems that assail cryptocurrency seems more feasible than fixing cryptocurrency at this point.
I don't want to rob you of your optimism after you made the effort to engage, but as all my knowledge and instincts say it is misplaced in this instance, so I will continue to advocate for what i believe will best serve us both and countless others in the long run. Even if you believe I'm wrong, consider that people like me fighting against cryptocurrency on environmental grounds are leverage you can make use of if you want them to actually stop dragging their heels on environmental issues. Have a good night, and a good future if it can be managed.
