They seemed like a company made of decent people that actually listen to their community of users (and I really do hope that they still listen now...), not taking themselves too seriously what with their casual approach to announcing new updates - a social platform that genuinely cared about making a space for users to chat and connect and all that good stuff.

Maybe I was wrong.

I cannot fathom a reason for implementing an NFT/cryptocurrency feature to discord; it is a social platform for communicating with people. It comes across as a money-grab, like discord is hopping on the bandwagon and following the same terrible path as all the other social media platforms that I was apparently naive enough to think discord was so different from.

And then there's the disgusting moral and ethical parts of NFTs - the environmental damage it causes (I don't care if there are 'better' approaches that are less destructive, any amount of environmental damage for some unnecessary gimmick is amoral. The planet is already on a railroad to destruction - the house is already on fire, we don't need to add gasoline to it.), and the inherent pyramid scheme nature of it; it takes advantage of people. Exploitation (of the planet's resources, of people using it, of people that aren't even using it and are just having their art stolen!) is written into its very nature.

I cannot support anyone - individual, company, organisation - that supports and advocates for NFTs. I've cancelled my nitro. The communities I'm a part of on discord, the precious conversations stored in chats from years upon years of using discord, the people I've met here, the friends I connect with through discord and discord alone - I'll walk away from all of it, if need be.

There will always be other social platforms, other chat apps, other streaming and voice call services.

There is only one planet Earth.
