the reasons i love(d) discord run contrary to everything NFTs stand for
last year, at the height of uncertainty around the pandemic, discord rebranded from calling itself just a "chat for gamers" to a place for communities to form, thrive, and expand. though i initially primarily used the platform to chat with a couple close friends, the change in discord's mission led to me joining several larger servers. as a reserved person, discord's focus on community helped bring me out of my shell both on and offline. but how could a company with the alleged mission to foster community online so quickly turn on real-life communities and the physical space they all inhabit for a quick buck? i'm sure several others have shared the sources, but i must reiterate the main point: NFTs are not only a scam but a horrific detriment to the environment. we are in a climate crisis, and it pains me to see so many individuals and companies take such a wide step in the wrong direction by turning to an energy-wasting and ultimately pointless fad. me and the friends i've met and kept close via discord, we are young adults entering a world that feels uncontrollable, doomed to waste away at times. i want this world to stay inhabitable to generations of communities, online and off. discord, if you care about community, ditch the NFT considerations and never look back.
