NFTs and Crypto are destroying the environment and will destroy Discord's reputation and userbase
For a company that claims to greatly support communities that are pro-environment (the Earth Day 2021 post and TeamTrees fundraiser from 2019, for example) and supporting individual artists with commissions (this Tweet from 11/23/2020, amongst artwork posted to promote Discord itself littered across the Twitter account over the last few years), it's bewildering to me that you'd even consider adding a feature that has been repeatedly proven to destroy the environment, treat art like a joke, and act as an MLM and scam for the ultra-rich. The sheer volume of outcry against Citron's tweet showing a future implementation of this feature should be enough to show that Discord's audience can and will leave if things like cryptocurrency support are added to the application - and plenty already have. I pay for two Nitro accounts and most of my friends have Nitro - while this only amounts to give or take a thousand dollars at most, this exodus will happen application-wide. Other communication apps are as functioning as Discord and people will migrate in a heartbeat. If you want an example of what going against your userbase can do, take the Tumblr exodus from a few years ago, and how those users migrated to Twitter.
Adding support for something that will cause a mass loss of support (and for that matter income) from a userbase is what has killed social medias in the past, and will kill Discord just as quickly. I'm already looking at my options for where to go next.

Seconded. Wasting quadrillions of CPU cycles is not the future of computing, and encouraging it is just evil. It is deeply saddening to watch platforms I love endorse these unsustainable fads. This is not decentralization, it's not radical, it's not groundbreaking, it's just disappointing. I am forced to wonder what exactly is motivating businesses to implement these blockchain integrations, since based on the public backlash, it certainly isn't the users.
It's incredible how shortsighted businesses become once they grow to a certain size. This decision will kill Discord if they stick to it. Maybe they know that, but are banking on making some kind of huge paycheck bonus from it before they're forced to close up shop...
