Quoting
Fuldført-
Discord is a perfect app but this feature is truly what keeps me from fully migrating. Sad. It's so complex in certain areas, it's unbelievable with so many requests and so many people talking about it still hasn't been added! I mean really??? Come on!!!
4 -
I've been utterly surprised both at the lack of this quoting function and the so much whining about it.
1 -
Adding my vote to this idea, it would be a huge QOL improvement.
2 -
I can't believe that this basic feature which most other platforms have, is still not available in Discord.
Did they screw up their code base so much from the beginning, that it's impossible to add in now or something?
1 -
Just make the damn quote system like Skype (ages ago) already has.
One button quote the text and that's it.
It's not a nuclear physics to be that hard to implement on discord, especially for you dev tem.
There are people who are trying their best to make the damn quotebots to make discussions more organized, but it's not that good.
Make the damn feature already ffs.3 -
Yes please, quoting needs to be in Discord. It's a very basic feature and it allows us to reply directly to someone after hundreds of messages. The number of likes of this post has to mean something.
3 -
+1 please add this

Quoting has been added—at least on desktop. I can't figure out how to quote on mobile (iOS) yet. There's some quirks, but it works!

It has been implemented purely as markdown. It's not the what the community wants and it falls far short of quoting features on every other messaging application.
2 -
Nelly, if you're still out there and if you have the ability, you should mark this question unanswered, because these really aren't quotes, they're just indented formatting. If you want to be able to literally quote people, there ought to be a way to do that, too. We can have both things, they're both useful in their own way, but we shouldn't settle for just the lowest-effort version of the two.
2 -
Yes true. Now we at least have a button in the context menu for quoting, it's still not enough, but I guess they are actively working on it now..

I'm posting this as a reminder that this wasn't implemented and that a look should be taken at this function. Unfortunately markdown is not quoting as many people before me already explained. Problems with markdown, no timestamps, no username, no reference link to message (possible other messages around), and mutability. Mutability is something that people who work with game developers should understand.
Personally I think it's the one key feature Discord is missing. After using discord for about a year, it is the one feature I constantly miss.
I'm an advocate of a reply to message function as it just avoids a lot confusion and hassle.
I've seen several requests of this already with. Some of those more than 200 upvotes. I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's just very hard to implement in Discord or if developers don't like it.
Also read this:
https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360030063152/comments/360003840311Also I checked in the "chat" section for requests here. It has the second highest number of votes ever, highest for not completed (just answered). It's also 7th in the highest amount of comments. Meaning there are a lot of users who want this. There are also threads in other places, such as Reddit, that ask about quoting in Discord.
Here are some of the posts or Reddit topics requesting the same thing:

Considering how much time this simple feature takes to be addressed perhaps it's just a choice on discord's part to not support it, as crazy as this sounds
1 -
@Poilaucul yes that's a possibility, however in that case they could at least let us know that.
Not letting people know causes frustration and makes it feel like they don't care.Quoting myself here from another post,
Quote:
"A lot of people really badly want this function, including me.Saying that you implemented it when you only implemented a new type of markdown is a bit strange to me. As I'm pretty confident that you also know that is not what everyone wants.
If you don't want to implement it then that's your choice as developers for Discord but then you could at least let us know. (For me that means looking for alternatives that better suit my needs unfortunately)
Not letting people know makes them frustrated and annoyed since it makes people feel like you don't give a fuck and choose to ignore them. Even a simple reply like, we're working on it but can't give you a timeline would be helpful. Also a "sorry we don't plan on implementing this in the near future" would be helpful. Saying you implemented it when you did not is not helpful as it reinforces the believe of, "they don't even pay attention to us at all"." (End quote)
Again nothing wrong with it, it can be a choice. However I (and I think many) would appreciate it if they gave some clarity about it.
Once they get good enough competition they will probably have to implement it or lose part of their users. Nonetheless they are the only free service that offers such a good messenger package which is why so many people use it.
Same with WhatsApp they didn't have end to end encryption, along came telegram, the takeover from FB and they had to do things to keep their user base, adding end to end encryption as well as implementing GIFs.Again it's their choice but I would really appreciate some clarity on the issue.
Most people aren't paying, so we can't make a stand or demand anything. Nonetheless I thinking asking for clarity is very reasonable, especially on a topic that is discussed so much.(5 months later and still pending approval? Either approve it please or delete it. The pending is getting ridiculous after 5 months, I can wait a long time but more than 1 or 2 months feels unreasonable to me.)

It's here!
I saw it on Android and so I checked desktop and it's there too!
It's a little basic and it always adds a mention but it's better than being punched in the face. amiright?
-2 -
Yes well done better than nothing!

@CptTwinkie no it's still not, it is a step in the right direction though.
What they have done is added a button/shortcut for a type of markdown, just like italic, bold, etc. Markdown is not Quoting.
I quote myself:
Unfortunately markdown is not quoting as many people before me already explained. Problems with markdown, no timestamps, no username, no reference link to message (possible other messages around), and mutability. Mutability is something that people who work with game developers should understand.A timestamp is not included, a reference link is not included and mutability is still a big problem.
A username is semi-implanted but in reality still just a markdown thing where it just adds @Username as text to the bottom of the quote.
And for those saying that they can't, well I think they are more than capable enough since part(s) of the function already exist
Seems like the linking should be doable as it already exists in developer mode
https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/8zy3r6/link_to_jump_to_a_previous_message_in_any_channel/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=shareIt is possible that they might integrate/introduce it in small parts which would be awesome, even better if they would everyone know.
But up until this date, it has not been implemented as what's considered a quote to most people.3 -
Bumping this since I haven't seen any new information in months.
2 -
Another 4 months have passed, about 9 -10 months.
A start was made but it was mostly not incorporated2 -
The reply feature was spotted somewhere in a screenshot and was commented on by staff just 3 weeks ago! They said the quoting feature was a placeholder until the the real feature is finalized. You can see a screenshot of what it looked like at the time too!

Hey why did this feature disappear???
3 -
IT IS HERE. FINALLY!
2 -
La fonction "citation" a disparu...

Hi, um.... Where did this feature go? Did it get replaced by 'reply'? Please tell me it ain't so.
1 -
Yes quoting is still here, you just need to use the markdown.
> this is a quote
2 -
This is not the quoting that we are requesting. Essentially what we want to know when Quoting are:
- Who said
- What
- When
- Context of the conversation
Much like this:
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360030063152/comments/360013706334
Except we I don't need to visit the link to read what was said.
>Yes quoting is still here, you just need to use the markdown.> this is a quote
-3 -
I'm sure most of the community agrees that we got what we requested.
1 -
Yes Jacko, I think so too. I agree for sure! So happy :))
1 -
I agree with Rey Tianero
Quoting should include what the person you're quoting said.
