Read/Seen Messages
I really think Discord should have a 'seen/read message' feature, mainly for DMs. I can never tell if someone has read my message or not. It'd be really useful to know if someone's ignoring me. Overall, I feel that it would be good to know if someone read a message I sent without having to reply or reacting to it. I'm unable to tell if a friend of mine read my message without having to ask if they did. It might be just me, but it kind of irritates me a bit when I do have to confirm. Also, for those saying that you can just react to a message, not everyone reacts to a message showing that they read what you sent, hardly anyone that I message does.
I don't think this would work for servers, but it would definitely work for direct messages. If people have mixed feelings about this, maybe this could be a feature that can be toggled off/on. A lot of other messaging apps have this feature, but I also think Discord should also have this. Overall, I think this would be useful for me and other people.
(Edit): This has so many comments, thanks, guys! But we really need more upvotes in order for Discord to see this. I'd really love for this feature to be released, please upvote guys. Really appreciate the comments from both sides. Hopefully, they'll notice eventually.

Man yes people would want this cause I'm sick of texting people then wondering if they seen it most times I know for a fact they seen the shit just choose to ignore it so I just remove myself from ppl like that but still it would be a good feature just have it where people can turn it on and off so people who don't like it and do like it can have their say over it simple

One of the reasons I love Discord and support it so much is because it doesn't do this kind of thing. I'm fine with some kind of feature being implemented, so long as there is a way for me to opt out of people being able to tell I've read a message. When you get several hundred tags a day from people who need a response, it would be annoying to view a message and immediately start getting pestered about why you haven't responded. So for some this would work, but I wouldn't be comfortable with using it.

Honestly speaking, I hate this kind of feature as I find it to be incredibly invasive and often time making me feel like I need to respond immediately, and I don't like that kind of pressure. If this were optional, sure, but please do not make this for everyone.

I think this is a great idea me and my bf us discord to talk and it's hard to know if he sees my message.

Do not make this a toggle feature, that defeats the whole purpose of this feature, to know if someone is ignoring you or not, this should work in DMS and group chats.

We've been considering switching from Skype to Discord at the office but not having this feature would be a deal breaker for me. It is incredibly valuable to see if your coworkers had the time to read your message.

Just reinstating my position as I still get emails on this. This is not a feature most people I know on discord want. This is intrusive, from my personal opinions it is the one reason I don't use facebook messenger.
If you want someone to acknowledge that they read your message, tell them to respond like a normal human being.

Clearly some people do want this feature, and some people don't. I suspect that people with either view are decent human beings. They just have different needs. IF it happened to be true that most (but not all) people didn't want an indicator of whether messages have been seen,, then how could we meet people's differing needs? The read/seen indicator function could be turned OFF as the out-of-the-box default position. Then people doing DMs or server managers could choose to turn the function on if they felt the need. PLUS each individual could turn the function OFF for themselves personally, as an override, if it was turned on by a server manager and the user didn't want it on.
Pursuing your own personal views in ways that look after your own user experience makes total sense, but blocking the availability of an optional function that others really want is heavy handed and in my view unnecessary..

I do believe that, if this happens, it should be a setting we can toggle off either app-wide or on a case by case basis. Just like any other program with read receipts.

At the moment, the only way I can know if a member is reading threads, is if they literally respond. Clearly this is no indication of how many people are reading the thread. Knowing which members are not reading announcements would be helpful in knowing which members to remove. At the moment, it creates a lot more work running a racing league having members that don't read certain informative pages. I've had to use 3rd party links getting members to sign in as the only way to know which members are reading important announcements.
It would just solve a lot of problems if this was all available in one place.1 -
To the people saying this is "intrusive", what part of "you can disable it" is hard to understand?

To those who keep reiterating the optionality of this feature, people who are against this feature have already answered this.
Some people will somehow be able to know that you've disabled this option, and that will just lead to questions on why you have it disabled. That alone can lead to many things.

Back in the day when discord was more like teamspeak / for gaming groups I'd understand why they'd lack read receipts.
However today, I mean, everyone uses it. My mom, dad, and brother use it in a family group with me. Indie dev groups use it instead of slack. Discord has been used for tech support by small projects, open source and otherwise. Now that more and more people use discord, it's become a lot more than just a group app to chat with your MLG Gamer Bros while you play minecraft and fortnite.
Moreover, discord DM's are a very common means of communication between people. For many, it's kind of the new texting. Read receipts help in a lot of situations and allow people to communicate with one another a lot more efficiently. Having it be optional solves the gray area of privacy. I personally think that it should be an option (opt-out) in DM's and an option (opt-in, possibly conditional to specific roles) for servers. Considering the plethora of use cases Discord now has taken up, it's really the least Discord can do to keep its status as a modern chat app.
Finally, for those who still don't want this feature because you may feel violated or endangered by someone and it gets to a level where you're threatened or w/e because they see that you disabled the feature, I'd recommend you just block them, since it's a VERY minor percentage of the people who would use this feature and if anything it's an issue with politeness rather than technology. If they want to be rude and pushy and force you to respond, then tell them "hey, can you not?" or block them. Similarly, if you want to be rude and pretend to busy, don't, the world needs a lot more communication and the richness of conversation was largely lost in this world where you can just click a red button and the person you're conversing with disappears.
Perhaps that's an issue much larger than discord and read receipts, but an issue about people in general and a society slowly getting less and less intimate behind the pale blue glow of screens where you can make anyone you're mad at disappear from your life forever at the press of a button. But, well, I think adding read receipts is a step in the right direction in, well, humanizing the way we communicate with one another.

I'd love this feature for small groups.
I don't really care about it in DMs. Either they see/read/respond or they don't. A little symbol there makes little difference.But in a group discussion especially where there's multiple timezones involved it's nice to know when everyone is up to date with the conversation.
And if it's a fast flowing conversation, you can also see who's actively involved and who hasn't caught up yet.
I agree it's pointless and ungainly in large servers.
In DM's it can just be optional like plenty of other services already do. If someone complains about you having your option turned off then you need new friends.
The biggest benefit is in small groups, especially those with multiple channels and for those who use Discord in a professional or semi professional capacity for sharing info within and across teams.I'm currently trying to move a lot of private and group messaging across from FB and this is one of the bigger roadblocks.
And of course, it can be turned off - user level, server level, channel level ideally.
If you don't like it, don't use it, but many of us find it useful to coordinate groups.1 -

idk if y'all know this but if you're using discord for work, just use slack. they're basically work-discord and read receipts are on their dev backlog.

Except Slack doesn't have roles, which are hugely important for team projects with multiple moving parts.

they have different channels and admin/member roles. they have the ability to create different channels which is good for 'multiple moving parts'

I was thinking along the lines of having the ability to ping a certain role. Granted, Slack does have @channel, but then someone can't join channels to see idle progress without getting a ping for something that's not their responsibility.

I had a healthy communication with someone that I chat with actively on Discord (our main mode of communication) and we agreed to use a reaction symbol as a sign that we had read each other's messages - and we do do this quite a bit, but a lot of the time we forget or are under time pressure so can't do it. Automating the process would suit both of us.

you could also just use telegram and let the people who want privacy keep privacy
it's not even something that's viable to make on/off, because if you turn them off you have to have conversations with others constantly about why yours are turned off and if you could turn them on

Much needed for group chats, especially those used for clans and guilds where clan leadership might want to know who read a message and who did not.
Am really not sure on why there is opposition to this. Surely having it set by default to not show your read receipt should alleviate most if not all the concerns?
