Helping to keep teens safer on Discord means making sure the right protections apply to the right accounts. When Discord knows your account belongs to a teen (13-17), we apply additional safety protections automatically, things like filtering sensitive content and restricting access to age-restricted spaces. You can read more about what those protections cover here.
For most users, our age estimation model determines your age group automatically and you would not need to confirm your age group. If you do want to confirm your age group, it's likely for one of these reasons:
- We don't have enough information to place your account in an age group yet and you want access to age-restricted content, spaces, or settings now. Additional safety protections apply in the meantime, while core features like messaging friends, joining voice calls or servers that are not age-restricted stay the same.
- Your account was placed in the wrong age group. Age estimation works by looking at patterns, so a small percent of accounts will land in the wrong group. You can fix this in a few minutes without needing to contact support.

Before You Start
A few things worth knowing:
- Discord does not directly handle your documents or images. To preserve your privacy, Discord doesn’t receive or access any images, ID documents, credit card details, or other info you might provide when you go through an age assurance process. We partner with age assurance vendors who handle this process and only pass back an age signal. We just need to know whether you're an adult. It works both ways: A vendor has no way to associate any of your information back to your Discord account. You can review the vendors we partner with and the privacy standards we have in place here.
- Facial age estimation happens on your device. Processing happens entirely on your device and your selfie is not shared with Discord or our vendors.
- Documents are deleted. Any images or ID documents during age assurance are permanently deleted as soon as your age group is confirmed. They are never stored or linked to your account.
- Your age group is saved to your Account Status. Once we’ve determined your age group, it’ll be saved and you can check it at User Settings > Account Status. Your age group isn't shown on your profile or visible to other members in a server.
- We will never ask you to confirm your age group by email or text. Age assurance only happens inside the Discord app. If you receive a message outside of Discord, do not select any links. It is not from Discord.
Step 1: Go to User Settings > Account Status
Open Discord and go to User Settings > Account Status. You'll see your current age group status and a Confirm Age button or hyperlink. Tap it to begin.
You can also start from a prompt if you tried to access age-restricted content, spaces, or settings and were asked to confirm your age, just tap Confirm Age in that prompt.

Step 2: Choose a Method to Confirm Your Age Group

Our goal is to give you as much choice as possible when confirming your age group. What's actually available to you depends on factors such as your region or device, so the options below may not be the same for everyone.
Apple App Store
Allow Apple App Store to share your age range with Discord to determine whether you're in the adult or teen age group. Your exact birthdate isn't shared.
1. Select Apple Age Range on the Confirm Your Age Group screen.
2. Select Share Age Range on the Discord Would Like To Know Your Age Range page.
3. Tap Continue to complete age assurance.

Google Play Store
Allow Google Play Store to share your age range with Discord to determine whether you're in the adult or teen age group. Your exact birthdate isn't shared.

3. Tap Continue to complete age assurance.

Credit Card
k-ID determines you're in the adult age group by checking ownership of a credit card. Your card details are processed through k-ID who uses Stripe's secure payment infrastructure. Discord only receives your age group or a note that the result was inconclusive. We never see your card details.
A small temporary charge (under $0.50 USD) may be placed to confirm your card is valid and will be fully refunded within 14 business days. Stripe retains limited financial records, as required by financial regulations, but this information isn't shared with Discord.

Google Wallet
Use a passport stored in Google Wallet to confirm your age group. Only your age group result and issuing country are shared. Your passport details stay private and never leave Google Wallet.

Video Selfie
A short video clip or selfie image is taken and then facial analysis is used to estimate your age. This all happens entirely on your device.
Discord and k-ID never see or store it, no data is shared, and nothing ever leaves your device.

ID Scan
Upload a photo of a government-issued ID, which is scanned by k-ID along with a selfie to confirm it's yours. Your ID and selfie are deleted immediately after your age is confirmed and will never be linked to your Discord account. Discord only ever receives your age.

AgeKey
A reusable age passkey you set up once through k-ID with either a video selfie, ID scan, or credit card. Once created, you can use it across services without confirming your age group again each time. If you already have an AgeKey with another company, you can re-use it here without needing to create another one.

2. If you already have an AgeKey, confirm to share your age group with Discord.
3. If you don't have one yet, you can continue the flow to create one.
4. Tap Done to submit.

Step 3: Finish Confirming Your Age Group
After completing a method, you'll receive a DM from Discord's official profile with your age group result. You can also check your age group status anytime in User Settings > Account Status.

In some cases, Discord may ask you to complete a second method if more confidence is needed. If we can't determine your age group, you can retry through another method.
The methods you see might be different based on previous attempts, and there may be a limit on how many times you can retry a given method. If you don't see a method right now, it may become available again later.
If Your Age Group is Still Incorrect
If you've finished confirming your age but believe your age group is still wrong, go to User Settings > Account Status and tap Retry to confirm your age with a different method.
We require all users to meet the minimum age requirement for their region. If your account was banned after being incorrectly determined as under the minimum age required in your region to use Discord, you can appeal by following the instructions here.

Q: Will I need to confirm my age group to keep using Discord?
A: No. You don’t need to confirm your age group just to access Discord. The vast majority of users are placed into an age group automatically by Discord’s age estimation model and don’t need to do a thing. You will only need to confirm you’re an adult if you want to access age-restricted content, spaces, or settings and have not been placed into the adult age group yet. This doesn't affect core Discord features like messaging friends, joining voice calls, or servers that are not age-restricted.
Q: Is my personal data stored during the age assurance process?
A: Discord only ever receives your age signal. Not your name, not your ID, not your selfie. We work with vendors that handle the age checks on their end to preserve your privacy because the goal is only to establish your age group, not your identity. Once the age check is complete, the underlying data is deleted, and Discord gets an age signal to place you into your age group (teen or adult). Your age group isn't shown on your profile or visible to other members in a server.
Q: When would I be asked to confirm my age group?
A: In most cases, this should only happen if you try to access age-restricted content, spaces, or settings and are not in the adult age group. There may also be times where you need to try another method if we need more confidence.
Q: How many times will I need to do this?
A: Usually once. After your age group is confirmed, it's saved to your account and you typically won't be asked again. In some cases, for example where we need more confidence, you may be asked to try another method.
Q: Which age assurance method should I use?
A: You can choose whichever you're most comfortable with. All age assurance methods and vendors are described here. We evaluate methods and providers for data security, and we don't use your data for anything beyond confirming your age group.
Q: Does this affect my account if I switch devices?
A: Your age group is saved to your account once it's confirmed, so it stays the same across devices. If you haven't yet confirmed your age group, the methods available to you may change depending on your device or the region where you’re accessing Discord. Legal obligations in some regions may impact what methods you can use or if you need to confirm your age group through a different age assurance option.
Q: Can other users see my age group?

Q: I got an email or text asking me to confirm my age. Is that from Discord?

Q: Are age signals received from age assurance used for advertising?
A: The age signals we receive through age assurance can only be used for safety purposes. Those signals are used to ensure users in the teen age group don't see ads meant for adults, and are not used to target ads.
Separately, advertisers on Discord can choose to reach people within broad age ranges that are based on signals (such as self-declared age) that are different and separate from the age signals that are collected through our age assurance process.
