When you’re typing in a text channel and you want to tag a friend in your message, you can start typing the username of your friend and automatically trigger the Mention Suggestion pop-up. With Mention Suggestions, you don’t have to enter “@” before typing your friend’s username and you can simply press the TAB key to insert the complete username mention in your message.
What do Mention Suggestions search for?
Mention Suggestions search through the text channel/DM/group message you are currently typing in for users who can view the DM or have View permissions enabled.
The feature looks for the following types of names:
- Username
- Display name
- Server nickname
- Custom friend nickname

A: Mention suggestions are only available on the desktop app at this time.
Q: How do Mention Suggestions work?
A: This is an app-side feature -- meaning that any matching happens directly on your device, not on our Discord servers. We don't look at your message content to make the match, your Discord app does this locally.
Q: Can I turn Mention Suggestions off?
A: Yes, you can disable Mention Suggestions by navigating to your User Settings, under Chat, then disable the "Show suggestions for user mentions as you type" option.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the text field, go to Suggestions in the context menu, then uncheck the Mentions box to disable Mention Suggestions.

Q: Can I use Mention Suggestions for server roles and apps?
A: No, Mention Suggestions are exclusively for Discord usernames. If you would like to mention a role or app, please make sure to type “@” before the role or app you want to tag in your message.
