Discord's mobile app has a new visual refresh that brings it closer in line with the desktop experience, including updated themes, new shapes, and a decluttered chat bar.
What this article covers:
New Themes: Ash and Onyx
The Ash theme, the original dark theme longtime users know, is back on mobile with improved contrast to meet modern accessibility standards. All four base themes from desktop (Light, Ash, Dark, and Onyx) are now available on mobile.
Onyx, previously known as Midnight on mobile, uses a true black background to match the desktop version. On OLED screens, this can help save battery. You can fine-tune contrast and saturation in your Accessibility settings.
1. Select Settings.
2. Select Appearance.
3. Go to Theme and select your desired theme.

Updated Device Theme Syncing
You can now choose which Light theme and which Dark theme are used when your device switches between Light and Dark mode, instead of being limited to the built-in Light and Dark themes.
1. Select Settings.
2. Select Appearance.
3. Turn on Same as Device Theme.
4. Choose the Light theme and Dark theme you'd like to use with each device mode.

New Shapes: Circles and Squircles
Shapes across the mobile app now follow a consistent shape rule: people are circles, and things are squircles (rounded-corner shapes).
- You, your friends, and bots in your direct messages (DMs) appear as circles.
- DMs and group DMs stay as circles.
- Servers and apps appear as squircles, including in your server list.

Updated Chat Bar
The chat bar has been decluttered to make more room for writing a message. Some actions have moved:
- Still in the chat bar: Emoji, Gift, Voice Message, and other quick actions.
- Moved into the + menu: Threads, using an App,
- New shortcut: long-press the + icon to jump directly to an action without opening the full menu.
