Privacy on discord.
Discord really should consider the deletion of messages from deleted users.
I have considered some of the possible reasons and difficulties that might come from it
I will try to mention them and show why I think it's best to just wipe all data from DMS and servers for deleted users.
Some of the reasons why discord might prefer to keep our data in DMS and servers
1. People can refer to them for general purposes
2. Possiblity of reporting for legal matters
3. Perhaps it is difficult to delete that data once discord has detached your personal data from the account (?)
4. Maybe it requires difficultly to produce this change(?)
Now to look at some of the reasons it should be deleted all.
1. Many users want this option, as they feel it's needed for their safety and privacy.
2. It is far more efficient than going and deleting every single message, which can be nearly impossible if you're an active user , who has spent much time on discord.
3. Users will feel generally more safe knowing they have the option to delete everything in the future.
Now I understand completely that it may be a worry that someone can just leave whatever trace they had on discord behind them. Especially if someone does something that requires legal attention. But it doesn't make much sense to me that after 30 or 60 days or even 90 days that keeping the messages there is going to change anything. At that point surely the account is likely never going to be reported. And even if that is the main issue with discord, the people who are committing such crimes , always have the option to delete their messages, in fact Anyone doing such a crime will always do that. So this feature doesn't do a whole lot for anyones safety, no matter how you put it
If messages were deleted some time after the account is deleted, we have usually sufficient time for anyone to report an issue. And we are keeping users safe and satisfied with their privacy. Even in the case that someone after 1-3 months remembers they want to report someone, it is highly unlikely this will occur much , if at all. I see there more cases of people being in danger of leaving their messages available to others , whereas I don't see many cases where people after 30-90 days are going to have the sudden desire to report someone.
The only possible issue with deleting all messages at this point, might be that it's not a tenable feature for discord to produce. I don't know much at all about this , but it's hard to imagine discord not implement something that simply deletes the messages from deleted users after some time.
In the end , I hope discord takes this seriously, as I've heard of others who have been hurt from this , and I fear I myself will negatively be affected in the future because there is no way for me to remove my data that Is on my deleted account.
