Are Twitter handle-like usernames really a good idea?

I couldn't help but notice the new announcement about making usernames entirely unique. I'm not so sure this is a good idea. To me, it's taking away one of the things that made Discord unique and just turning the whole username system into another cutthroat "first come first serve" system that social media platforms suffer from.

  They are not. Unless you don't actually care about your userbase, and just want to find new ways to monetize them or try and poach users from other sites.
