[Enshittification][DO NOT ADD] Discord Username System
Did you know? Discord is reworking/removing their partnership program (as it currently stands)
Hey there @everyone! Been about 2 months since I changed this post. And it's been a hot minute, but the username update has now been worked into Discord. No matter if we liked it or not. And people will now (forcefully) get used to it.
As a suprise, this idea has the MOST ever comments and votes recieved on a single post on the feedback platform EVER. The story around this event is the most interesting I have ever seen. And the gerne around it still hasn't ended either. We'll see where all of this goes.
On that note, I have been working on a little project regarding that, since Twitter, Discord, Reddit and Tiktok are heading all into the same route. Our own little enshittification.social! A mastodon instance for the enshittification of companies and they services they used to offfer. (Twitter, Unity, Discord, and so on)
Would you like to participate in an UNOFFCIAL poll? Click here!
(NOT affiliated with Discord in any way, shape or form)
We thank everyone for their votes, comments and joining our DIscord server and enshittification instance. The story of enshittification will never end and we can see that with the recent Unity Pricing changes.
I've recieved a press request through Discord, however I'm moving that to email, if any press wants to reach out about the update from someone willing to represent the entire discord community against this change, send an email here:

Hey, even game devs are struggeling getting their official name as verified servers:

So what is it with this update?
So generally, this update has recieved a TON of backlash. And this feedback post has already recieved just about 13k upvotes at the time of writing AND a change.org petition with 13k people having signed it,
Fundementally this change to discord is going to cause more issue's for it's users then it could be worth. Among the comments, there are a few I'll display/mention.
One of the major issues that can be confirmed is the resale of Discord accounts. That is something that is unable to be denied and is going to be a major issue. Example here:

What discord has done absolutly wrong during this update:
Discord staff has been claiming double the names, one for their private account. Another for their staff account. Some of these usernames that are being claimed are so rare that people are speculating they are planning to sell it one day or another. The communication is absolute crap, they have not communicated how they where planning to do the roll-out and the way people are now claiming names left and right, from piewdiepie, markiplier and other names that should have been reserved. Then the way access get's rolled out? Verified bots where supposed to get access first, then supposedly brands, moving on to the staff and then the partnered and verified servers. Then the general population. But this has so far changed even more, starting with people from the moderator program, and suddenly the Hypesquad event team. And we still do not have enough information to know what the next bracket will be. There is no proper communication apart from Discord telling us to append our tag/discriminator to our usernames if we can't use it. Or you know just don't make usernames unique. The reddit has been stormed with people hating this update. And when people go to the support page, they're told to respond to feedback, or create it. We've all done this, but Discord still hasn't made an official statement. The entire update wasn't even properly announced like they do with everything else. Hidden behind their Birthday suprises. With the nitro trails providing people with 2 weeks of nitro to forget they signed up and pay an additional month. Normally, this would be tweeted and announced everywhere properly. People are moving away from Discord in an attempt to revolt, they're disbanding Nitro to put a dent somewhere in Discord's earnings. But that'll probably be recouped by investors. Discord claims to listen to feedback. But we've seen nothing of this yet. As a ton of people are saying, Discord is turning into Twitter, we don't want to see it happen. But with the 300 million active users on Discord, we're barely making a dent with this feedback post.
What are some good ways to fix this update?
The previous system worked perfectly, nothing to change about it. However using the display name system is a good idea. Maybe even supporting for official known people to get a username, or a checkmark to define "hey they are official" without the Twitter "pay for a blue tick" bs.

How do you do this

This is disgusting idea. Take my upvote.

I don't know what benefit this move provides, even the explanation doesn't make any sense.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

this is the worst idea discord has had in a long time.
I use a simple, one-word name: zucchini. and since zucchini is a fairly common word, literally a vegetable you'll see in most grocery stores, I have to fight to get this name on most apps. zucchinii, ZUCCHlNll, zucchini__, z.ucchini - you name it, I've probably had to use it. if I'm lucky, I'll be able to grab it before someone else, but the chance of that happening is one in a million. and discord wasn't like that.
my username, that everyone knows me by, that I have had since.. I believe mid-to-late 2018? will definitely get swiped out from under me if this change goes through. something I have always liked about discord is the ability to have almost any name; I wouldn't have started using zucchini everywhere if not for discord allowing me to have a single word, numberless username, and not having to fight for the name I use. I do not care about display names, I want my username that I have had for years.

I know the code has already been made, I know some bots have already changed their username, but please roll this back. Please communicate with your own community, Discord.

my steam id and username is constantly googled by creepy men i run into in online games. i do not want them to be able to find my discord and this new system is going to make it so much easier for them unless i completely change my entire identity
the current system does not have that issue. please do not push this update and make me even more exposed to harassment and spam

I've been using Discord for like 6 years at least.. at the start I was like "why would I use it? Teamspeak is just as good". After taking a look once, I was immediatly impressed by the name system and because it just looked way better then TS I abandoned TS without a second thougt. I have been using Discord since then without ever doubting any decision y'all made. I've always been very satisfied, unlike every other app that regularly do things I don't like. For the first time in forever I am disappointed. After reading like 100 comments here, I didn't find even 1 that likes this change. They all state more reasons than you could ever need. New reasons appear faster than you can even read them.. Let's be honest, I won't stop using Discord, but I can guarantee that you will never again get even a single cent out of me. Because the name system is just the best I have ever seen. All the content being free to use was also always a reason to support you by buying nitro. But if you are already impersonating those mainstream trash media, how do I know that stuff being pay to use won't be the next update? Just please rethink.. Your income is going to be cut in half by such a useless change that has literally ZERO benefits for ANYONE, besides HACKERS and SCAMMERS.. Also, kick out the guy who thought this would be a good change to be made..13 -

Stupid change to make, you are completely out of touch with your userbase if you really think this is a great and revolutionary idea to bring to this platform. I will be cancelling nitro and my Discord usage is about to drop significantly if this goes through, my friends and I have kept the Teamspeak up as a fallback in case things started to go the way of Skype and now here we are, only somehow this is worse than any of the stupid decisions they ever made. Make your move, Discord, we're all eagerly waiting to see what you do, it's never too late to back out and say it was a mistake.

+1, now instead of just typing in "Pixel" and having discord add a semi-hidden discriminator into it, now I have to either:
- snipe the name pixel (which is impossible to do for me)
- figure out a clever word to add to the word pixel
- turn my username into "Pixel2416231223" which is 10x harder to remember than my current username or is the same difficulty since I still have a discriminator that's 10x more obvious
not to mention I'm the type of guy to spend 30 minutes overthinking usernames and figuring out a unique one, and I don't think I'm alone on this one

Discord is going to lose their uniqueness. this is just absurd, why would you remove a crazy old feature "just cuz tech-incompetent people cant use it"? Discord was the place *for gamers*, why do you wanna change that now?

The discriminator system is a major appeal of Discord to me, and I like it everywhere else, like Battle.net and Xbox live. Unique alphanumeric usernames are an awful system everywhere it's used.
8 -
I have had my tag for literal years across multiple accounts, I specifically payed for nitro to keep my tag because it was so very special to me (The tag #2020, the year I graduated) and I will absolutely be cancelling if this change happens, as I'm sure many others will. As well, this will cause many people to lose their usernames to others, or have smaller artists(such as myself) being impersonated with no protection because they aren't larger streamers or youtubers. This is an awful change.

Discord will not regain face with its userbase until whatever self-aggrandizing corporate chucklefart committee that came up with the username change plan is forced to stand up on stage and eat their own neckties on livestream. While covered with ants. :)
I've canceled Nitro and my extra boosts because of this. I will not be manipulated by the backpedaling, screaming "current subscriptions will get name change prio!" You will not stop subs from slipping through your fingers by ignoring the clear expressed desires of your users. An apology and a commitment to your customers, however, just might.0 -
I really want to know WHY in the f- have you thought it would be a good idea.
I really wanna unsub from nitro, but I do love the emotes. I guess i can save them as .png and send pics instead.

The lack of simple names available like Mike or Jane is probably Discord's most valid argument on the change, but I don't understand how does limiting a username to only 1 person instead of 9999 people make anything better? They're completely ignoring the fact that usernames are case sensitive and changing atleast one letter of a name to lowercase or uppercase and/or adding something as simple as a _ to your name can raise the possible usernames to over 39,996 (and I swear there isn't that many people demanding the name Mike on the platform). And after the change there would only be 1 @mike and one @jane, so their "fix" kind of turned into a bigger issue. Something as simple as just adding a 5th digit to the discriminator would be more than enough to fix the issue. The rest of the arguments seem kinda pointless and feel like they're just there to fill up the page. I hope they consider the clear backlash from the community (even though that's not very likely).

Well would you look at this! Discord is screening comments that talk about c_nceling N_itro.
I've tried to include a screenshot but it isn't going through, lmfao.
8 -
It just forces you to add numbers endlessly, making thinking up a username a more arduous and annoying process. Absolutely horrid change.
6 -
I have not been stalked but if I were I can only imagine the shit a permanent username would bring.
5 -
c._anc_elling my n1tr0 btw!!!!
9 -
Here's another screenshot for context. Tsk, tsk!
I wonder how many other comments on this thread are being quietly screened by a bot, and the commenter doesn't realize?
9 -
I will be cancelling my nitro which I have had for 3 years if this goes through
11 -
this change is so shit man, literally benefits no one except (maybe) someone who is using an electronic device for the first time 💀
11 -
I might have another example of this: I see a comment from user dogsong that came through the email reply subscription, but that I don't see in the actual thread here now.
Here you can see that it should be shown just before ThirdDeveloper's reply.

Discord devs absolute morons confirmed.
11 -
I 100% agree that case sensitive usernames was a mistake. But this seems like a really bad way to solve it.
Surely a system of server invite style invites for adding friends, or making it easy to generate a QR code to add someone as a friend when connecting IRL would be a better and less disruptive solution.
My least favourite part is potentially losing contact with some more occasional friends as they’re forced to seek out new names and I might not be able to find them anymore.
That and I’ve given out my user + tag to people + put it in blog posts + gists / etc… and now that’ll all need to be changed.
One of the reasons I’ve maintained my nitro subscription without any gaps is keeping my discriminator solid. I guess at least now that’s not something I’ll have to worry about?11 -
Making a comment to boost this again, because I support this sentiment.
10 -
Please don't implement this.
No one asked for this. No one wants this.13 -
@smaller they are not deleting comments, it's more they are not approved.

Discord exposed?? 🤨
