[Enshittification][DO NOT ADD] Discord Username System
Did you know? Discord is reworking/removing their partnership program (as it currently stands)
Hey there @everyone! Been about 2 months since I changed this post. And it's been a hot minute, but the username update has now been worked into Discord. No matter if we liked it or not. And people will now (forcefully) get used to it.
As a suprise, this idea has the MOST ever comments and votes recieved on a single post on the feedback platform EVER. The story around this event is the most interesting I have ever seen. And the gerne around it still hasn't ended either. We'll see where all of this goes.
On that note, I have been working on a little project regarding that, since Twitter, Discord, Reddit and Tiktok are heading all into the same route. Our own little enshittification.social! A mastodon instance for the enshittification of companies and they services they used to offfer. (Twitter, Unity, Discord, and so on)
Would you like to participate in an UNOFFCIAL poll? Click here!
(NOT affiliated with Discord in any way, shape or form)
We thank everyone for their votes, comments and joining our DIscord server and enshittification instance. The story of enshittification will never end and we can see that with the recent Unity Pricing changes.
I've recieved a press request through Discord, however I'm moving that to email, if any press wants to reach out about the update from someone willing to represent the entire discord community against this change, send an email here:

Hey, even game devs are struggeling getting their official name as verified servers:

So what is it with this update?
So generally, this update has recieved a TON of backlash. And this feedback post has already recieved just about 13k upvotes at the time of writing AND a change.org petition with 13k people having signed it,
Fundementally this change to discord is going to cause more issue's for it's users then it could be worth. Among the comments, there are a few I'll display/mention.
One of the major issues that can be confirmed is the resale of Discord accounts. That is something that is unable to be denied and is going to be a major issue. Example here:

What discord has done absolutly wrong during this update:
Discord staff has been claiming double the names, one for their private account. Another for their staff account. Some of these usernames that are being claimed are so rare that people are speculating they are planning to sell it one day or another. The communication is absolute crap, they have not communicated how they where planning to do the roll-out and the way people are now claiming names left and right, from piewdiepie, markiplier and other names that should have been reserved. Then the way access get's rolled out? Verified bots where supposed to get access first, then supposedly brands, moving on to the staff and then the partnered and verified servers. Then the general population. But this has so far changed even more, starting with people from the moderator program, and suddenly the Hypesquad event team. And we still do not have enough information to know what the next bracket will be. There is no proper communication apart from Discord telling us to append our tag/discriminator to our usernames if we can't use it. Or you know just don't make usernames unique. The reddit has been stormed with people hating this update. And when people go to the support page, they're told to respond to feedback, or create it. We've all done this, but Discord still hasn't made an official statement. The entire update wasn't even properly announced like they do with everything else. Hidden behind their Birthday suprises. With the nitro trails providing people with 2 weeks of nitro to forget they signed up and pay an additional month. Normally, this would be tweeted and announced everywhere properly. People are moving away from Discord in an attempt to revolt, they're disbanding Nitro to put a dent somewhere in Discord's earnings. But that'll probably be recouped by investors. Discord claims to listen to feedback. But we've seen nothing of this yet. As a ton of people are saying, Discord is turning into Twitter, we don't want to see it happen. But with the 300 million active users on Discord, we're barely making a dent with this feedback post.
What are some good ways to fix this update?
The previous system worked perfectly, nothing to change about it. However using the display name system is a good idea. Maybe even supporting for official known people to get a username, or a checkmark to define "hey they are official" without the Twitter "pay for a blue tick" bs.

+1 Such a terrible change. Bet your bottom dollar that I and others will ditch Nitro if this goes into prod.

There is a pretty sus discrepancy between the email comment feed, and actual visible comments here.

cancelled my nitro just now as well
hey discord, you wanna keep getting money? how about you listen for once?
if boycotting worked with getting them to back down on NFTs it can work with this, money is the only thing they'll listen to
11 -
I'm cancelling my nitro because of this. They need to just add an alphabet to the discrimination for new users.

good morning everyone. I am here with some quick mockups on how-to-teach-everyone-what-a-discriminator-is-in-2-minutes
when you first register for discord, you get some fun pointers

clicking on one gives you a tip bubble:

so, just put one near the discriminator:

all done!

Худшая идея за последнию тысячу лет. Откажитесь пока не поздно
6 -
This idea is not safe, stupid and leads to a worse situation
9 -
I agree with this man on all points Discord GIVE UP THE IDEA
10 -
If only 9999 people can have the same username, then how is only giving it to one supposed to fix it?

As a long time user, I can't support the proposed username change. It will create more problems than it will attempt to solve. The current system is much better, in many ways and for many reasons.
10 -
This will lead to impersonation, fraud, and safety issues. Keep the discriminators, it was such a good implementation.
9 -
@Finny that's my point. I don't understand how that would fix the "issue".

this may be the worst update ever11 -
I'm testing a theory that the word manipulate gets your post censored here. Test:

Discord has no plans to reverse this decision because it is an infrastructure change. As mentioned in the article, they had to make changes due to the older system. I agree about the concerns regarding scamming, people stealing usernames to sell them at a profit, and partners getting first dibs on usernames, but there isn't anything we can do about it.
I do agree about one thing they did do right, though, and that is older/legacy accounts getting access to change their username before those who made their accounts at a later date. I am going to miss my precious #0001, but there isn't much I can do but accept the fact it will be disappearing.

Honestly just a bad idea, not much more can be said because everyone else has brought up the concerns. I cancelled my nitro and started migrating my friend groups over to other sites. Seems like Discord just likes shooting themselves in the foot.
10 -
Great idea, guys. I don't think this should have ever been an idea in the first place
9 -
discord actively trying to make us switch to teamspeak with this one lmao
10 -
Well, you can get into the Teamspeak beta right now, and the code is actively mocking Discord, lmao:

Another reminder to anybody who's just THOUGHT about canceling nitro or who have said they'll cancel nitro if this goes through: Don't wait. Do it now. They won't care if you wait. They only see it if you actually act. You can always resub later.

This is their “evidence” for people not knowing what a discriminator is. They actually linked to this low engagement post on their own blog here.
This is one of the most pathetic excuses of “evidence” for a widely frowned upon update I have ever seen. It’s reddit, and less than 300 people commented as of typing this. Some of which weren’t even answering, but also talking about how this being used as evidence is piss poor. But let’s pretend there are 300 comments all guessing and 40% of them didn’t know. That’s 120 people. 120 out of 150,000,000 users said they didn’t know what it was called, not that they didn’t know the function, they didn’t know the name of it. And that’s enough to justify pissing off your users? Really?
18 -
PLEASE DON'T. Current system is so much better. Also, one of the best things nitro has to offer is custom discriminator, this would complete remove that. I personally don't have nitro but the few times I've considered buying it one BIG reason was the custom discriminator.

Discord has no plans to reverse this decision because it is an infrastructure change. As mentioned in the article, they had to make changes due to the older system.
They'll surely have plans to reverse the change when there's a massive cut in their revenue, and they can no longer pay the bills. Don't let them just step over you like a door mat and clean the dirt off of their shoes on you. Realize that you're more than that, and make it known to them that they are nothing without you, as that's what is the truth is and fact of the matter.
For everyone that has Nitro, cancel it right now if you're against this, if you haven't yet. Don't just say it, either, but actually do it. Let them know in the cancellation reason too. That's the best way that they'll hear you, as money talks.
All you are to them is dollar signs. Let's change that.
22 -
Cancelled my nitro. Don't know what the people up at discord are thinking. This is a terrible change that no one wants.
17 -
discord citing technical debt as one of their justifications is ridiculous. you idiots have so much surplus money that you can pay for your employees' SRS. your job positions are highly valued by software engineers around the world. you have no problem paying for the talent you need to fix these problems. how about you stop with the endless feature creep, and actually fix this "technical debt" PROPERLY by cleaning up your codebase?
how the hell do discrims cause the accumulation of technical debt anyway? discord must be insanely incompetent to be able to do that...
16 -
This is the single most thoughtless update in a software I've ever seen in over 15 years.
This Reddit post summarizes most of the issues that will arise and why this username system is not fit.
And the censorship on new posts and comments on older posts is awful. A company of this size not being able to take in criticism?
16 -
Honestly to forcibly remove discriminators and force people to change usernames is such a bad idea, what are they thinking? Account selling, scams, hacks, the risks this update poses are not to be ignored. I'll be cancelling my nitro subscription if or when this update rolls out. Likewise, just as the above comments have stated, it really won't make anything easier for ANYONE. Multiple other platforms use discriminators, such as Bungie, for example, with no issue or complaint. One of the biggest appeals of discord is the ability to have your username be whatever you want without all the hassle of "this username is already taken" because of the discriminators.
All around, many others have voiced concerns more thoroughly than I could articulate, and I wholeheartedly agree that this change is a horrible idea.
16 -
Another idea, instead of only cancelling your Nitro subscriptions, contact the billing department asking for a Nitro refund since you aren't being given what you paid for. A custom discriminator.
