Discords Username Policy and the problems it brings.
I've been using Discord for nearly 7 years now, I've also owned "June#0001" for over 5 years.
Almost every single week I am added by random users on Discord who are constantly trying to offer me a price for my username so they can sell it online, or they're trying to gain access to my account for the same purpose; to resell my username and make a profit. Some of these people are your typical "Hustle Culture" people who specialize in Crypto and nowadays e-commerce/Dropshipping.
Some of these people have gone as far as conmakinging me off-platform and making threats on my life and attempting to Dox me, just for my username. I feel like if I actually manage to obtain the username "@June" I'm probably going to get even more spam, death threats, and eventually be put in danger, all over a username for a messaging app.
My honest response to this new feature; please don't go forth with this new feature and go for alternative solutions:
- Let anyone have whatever username they want and only use discords ALREADY EXISTING UserID system to decipher different users. (I know this can make it easier to impersonate but not having verified socials in their profiles would instantly make it redundant)
- If people want to add each other they can create a temporary "Friend Code" or a "Quick Invite Link" (Similar to how Steam does it)
I understand that Discord is doing this to make it easier to add friends, but honestly, I feel like it's just going to make this issue worse. Eventually, all of these unique usernames are going to be behind paywalls through these kinds of people and everyone will have to start adding numbers and symbols to their "unique" name. They say it's to make it easier to identify people, but the discriminators already did a good enough job. Even the excuse of "you don't have to include the discriminators in the username when trying to add someone" will become redundant because people will HAVE to include more numbers and symbols in their name since the alias they prefer to go as is already taken by someone trying to make money off of it or it just already being taken. Making it even more tedious to try and add users.
Overall, Discord seems to be pretty adamant about this feature, but it can only do so much to prevent this problem. I'm also kinda just coping since I've had Discord Nitro ONLY so I can have the convenience of my username It would be nice if I can get "@ June" but it makes me think that this issue is just going to make it worse for me and I might just have to unfortunately go under a specific alias for my discord if this feature does end up fully going through.

This is a great post with amazing solutions that would be feasible to add without much error or inconvenience. One of the better comments on the topic.
