DO NOT CHANGE THE DISCRIMINANT SYSTEM
i feel like if a company makes a change that nobody wanted or asked about there is probably someone who really wants this change to happen and probably for reasons that aren't great
and there are way easier ways to fix the gripes that they talked about, it's also just an incredibly stupid idea that'll just make it easier for PEOPLE TO GET LITERALLY STALKED, also good lord why would you remove foreign characters. NON-ENGLISH USERS OF THIS SERVICE EXIST

Removing the discriminant system is a terrible idea. Abandon this change, please.

it's not just foreign character, it's every common character that are not lowercase letters or _ and .
so even () [] += {} *$€ - # " ~&, which are extremely common and for most of them, really easy to say out loud ( bracket, squary bracket, plus, equal, curly bracket/brace, star, dollar, euro, minus/dash/hyphen (also called 6's stroke here, as opposed to underscore), sharp, quote, tilt, ampersand )
as you can see, i'm among the people who will get directly impacted that way :/
EDIT: ok, that website doesn't display it correctly, I'm <>There is plenty of others bad reason btw, as for exemple: the 10.000 mike now will have to fight for a single name, can't differenciate themself with "Mike!","mike","Mike", etc, and will be forced to have instead a longer, harder to remember number, because discord won't give them anymore, so you'll have to put a long enough number to hope it's not taken, thus making names longer as there will be much more unused names that noone will find because we have better things to do than test if the 10.000 first usernames are taken, and because of the extremely reduced possibility on differentiating on the base name, given all the forbiddens characters.
