Changing Nickname Permissons

I am on a server with a few friends. This is the only server we are on together. Unfortunately, the people who have the “Manage Nicknames” permission keep taking away our permission to change our own nicknames, and changing ours to things that are mean. We don’t want to leave the server because there are so many people we enjoy in there, and we can’t get them all to join a different server. I feel as though everyone should be able to change/reset their own nickname, no matter what. I would be OK with the mods changing my nickname as long as I was able to change it back.
