Text Terminal Client
There's times when I'm using a text-terminal only environment and have no desktop environment at all. ( And therefore no GUI, no way to launch Discord. ) During these times, I'd like to still be able to keep up conversing with my friends. I also would like a client with a smaller memory footprint. Would you be willing to greenlight and support a text only Discord client? I can help develop it if need be. It'd be nice to have this as an official client for communicating on the Discord network since most of my friends aren't willing to use multiple chat services at once or jump to Jabber or IRC. It would also help me to be able to monitor my servers during times when I do not have full capacity to use Discord's normal client or the browser mode. Personally I'd also use this just for personal usage. Images could be displayed as links in the text client. Naturally voice and video call wouldn't be supported, but I wouldn't need or want it in these circumstances. As it stands, I have to resort to a relay bot, which I consider to be an inelegant solution. The amount of overhead for such a client should be minimal and if you allowed custom clients, a plethora would already exist.

A TUI client would be a nice have, the normal client uses too much memory while doing other tasks and can come in handy. Maybe this could be made available as something that discord has less of a priority on maintaining, sort of like a side project, but wouldn't necessarily count as TOS violation.

BUMP! I need this so much! If not a full-blown terminal ui app, then at least to have some cli with commands to perform actions on the official client. Like "send this string to the channel with this id", "get last channel message as string" or "change status to busy" - the last one is super useful to script with times i have meetings so that whole conference room doesn't have to listen to my discord notifications.

if discord does not want to create their own terminal client (which is understandable) they should at least allow us to make one
https://github.com/Bios-Marcel/cordless
(send from a lagging raspberry Pi400 on which the official client does not run)

I fully agree on this one!
An official terminal client would be friggin' awesome!
Found some Python thing (DiscordPY) but I'm not really sure on how to use it, if even possible.

BUMP!
I dont see much concerns over privacy and bot issues on this. Everything seems to be implemented already, please do the niche community a huge favor and either make any current option official, or supported. Thanks devs!

I think it's so cool that Discord supports Linux so well. It seems like a modern and forward-looking company. This would surely be the next step - we'd still be using Discord, just less clutter on our machines!
I think the product you have is your community of users, right? What's wrong with making the API available for any use?

bump. I want to use Discord from a TRS-80 model 100 through a TTY session.

Yes, please. Bump. I need a client that runs smoothly on a RPi 3B.

I need this to. If they don't want to make it themselves, allow one of the current solutions work!

Bump! This is actually a good idea for people like me who sometimes only have access tp a TUI

Bump def need that!

This is a old post, but I would LOVE to see this. It is a shame that cordless was shut down because they banned the creator, discord should at least have some sort of verified clients system.

+1, please support terminal projects. Every app in my system run in term except discord. I just prefer lightweight non graphical applications I can use from my keyboard.

I support this. There are days when I don't even need to start a GUI except for Discord. Having to press Ctrl+Alt+F7 just to keep up w/ messages really breaks the workflow I already have going in a tty session. Especially on machines where there's a delay when jumping between the 2. If third party clients aren't allowed, having an official CLI version would be the next best thing. The fact that there are Linux-specific settings and an IRC option for text chat is a step in the right direction at least.

oml yes please!!

One day we will open the terminal, attach to the tmux/screen we're working on and use the Discord client on one of the panes just like we use irssi. That day we will not forget these days when it was a dream to have a CLI based official Discord client. That day we will smile.

+1, I'll throw my hat into the ring as well

I'd really love to see one as well!

Yeah, the official app and browser version is quite laggy, I'd love to use a TUI and not get banned for it.

Bumping this, hopefully we'll get to see a discord-cli in the future!

There are Cordless and Gord (continuation), but the devs quit because of suspended accounts and lack of time and such.
It's absolutely terrible that such efforts are shut down for those of us with accessibility issues that just want a decent terminal client.2 -
+1 would love to see this. Very bad behaviour from Discord to ban 3rd party clients, makes me not want to use this platform.

Bump. It's absurd that it's not supported
