Revert status icon changes
The old status icons were perfect in their design: minimalistic in their design, easy to understand at a glance, and weren't unnecessarily complicated, i.e. solid green/yellow/red/grey. These new ones were changed just for the sake of changing them, they add no real new value while looking pretty bad from a design standpoint.
It'd be great to see these changes reverted, or at the very least an option to use the old status icon symbols.

I agree with wanting them changed back. The new offline icons that are grey circles with holes in the middle set off trypophobia for me, which is making discord harder to use. Since that's a fairly common phobia, I assume I'm not the only one with this issue. If the reason for the change is accessibility for colourblind people, using different values of grey or different shapes such as squares and triangles could achieve the same effect.

I definitely agree with this. On top of that, the white status icon whenever someone is playing something or listening to Spotify just doesn't look appealing.
Bringing back the Colorblind Mode, which was removed with this update, would be a welcome change (plus, the old Idle status icon actually looked better in the Colorblind mode than the new default (in my opinion)).
17 -
Yeah I don't like forced UI changes without an option to keep what I already like. Why push these new icons on us without a way to revert back to the ones we liked more?
15 -
I understand that this change was done for accessibility reasons, but please don't force it on everyone. Make it an opt-in.
19 -
And I should add: the reason I say they're changed just for the sake of changing them is that there was already a colorblind mode. Yes, they're for accessibility, but a solution was already in place for that, and the new icons are objectively an eye-sore. Put back in the colorblind option, and revert the changes, please.

I'll probably be the only one here who likes the new icons, but I do agree: Make it toggle-able for accessibility, don't force it on everyone.
12 -
While it may be hard to adjust to, the change was definitely not done "just for the sake of changing it." Accessibility is a focal point of any thought out design, and making it standard rather than opt in provides a more inclusive experience for visually impaired users. If the case is that it's unsettling for some users, maybe a change to the offline icon could be considered, but overall I think it's worth considering the intention of the change and working from there. -14 -
Im with you. They bother me a lot and completely ruin the aesthetic for me. Keep it in color blink mode, I dont want it.

I absolutely agree, forcing everyone to use colorblind mode and removing an option to toggle that, is an extremely bad idea. The old icons were absolutely perfect and the colorblind mode icons are just meh at best. And forcing everyone to use them when only very few Discord users actually need them is just a big no no. As well "making it standard rather than opt in provides a more inclusive experience for visually impaired users", I see what you mean, but removing the toggle is still a really bad idea, there is no company in the world I can think of that would force people to use accessibility features, it's like having VoiceOver (Narration) on without a way to disable it, everyone who doesn't need it will have an absolutely horrible experience.

@AngelRose It should have never been forced upon everyone just like that though. It was fine the way it was. If they wanted to make it opt out instead, then that would be 100x better then just forcing it upon people

AngelRose, it used to be a setting. The fact that Discord removed the setting and is now forcing it on people is wrong. That's what they changed and it definitely is for no reason. Don't use accessibility as an excuse. Accessibility is great and all but not everybody should have to use those features.

A few things. First, the suggestion that “very few” users benefit from the distinction is an assumption, and an incorrect one. This idea of a change being “forced” simply because it doesn’t feel necessary to you isn’t a good way of thinking either. You don’t complain when the only entrance to a building is a ramp, even if stairs are prettier. You may complain about an aesthetic change to a social media platform, but we get used to it, right? You will with this too. I’m very aware that this used to be a setting, but creating a platform that’s usable by anybody without needing to change any settings is the gold standard of design, and the efforts to give all users the same experience should be applauded. We naturally don’t like change, I get that, but we get over it. “Don’t use accessibility as an excuse” is an incredibly toxic attitude, by the way. Everything should be designed with the users in mind. Thoughtful designers think of *all* of the users. Making something “accessible” is fine, but making something inclusive is the goal. Making the experience as similar as possible for everyone. Not creating a differentiation between people based on ability. That’s what they’ve done, and coming from a background of marketing and working within the disability community, I understand their intention and think it’s amazing. -14 -
Some users (such as the one making this suggestion https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360048067071-New-offline-status-indicators-are-not-good-for-people-who-are-prone-to-trypophobia ) would like this to be reverted for their own accessibility reasons. Please could the change become optional? (Opt in or opt out) 7 -
Having the current icons as the default would be completely fine with me as long as there's the option to have the old solid circle icons. I don't understand why this change is being marketed as accessibility when the accessibility was there before with colourblind mode and all that was done was take away the option to have the simple designs. I understand wanting the more accessible option to be the default, but that's not a reason to take away the ability for people to adapt the experience for their own needs and preferences.

I also absolutely agree on having a toggle to go back to the old ones as I greatly preferred them. The new idle one is personally messing with me too, as whenever I quickly glance at discord I simply cannot see it.
I get why it was made the new default, but you should never remove the option to go back.12 -
@AngelRose He wasn't being toxic at all. He was pointing out the fact that not everybody in the world is colourblind and that some people have issue with the new design or hate it. Also trying to use an excuse about "You may complain about an aesthetic change to a social media platform, but we get used to it, right?" as not everyone likes changes to something that doesn't need to be changed, and they have a choice to change it using themes with extensions. Some sites like reddit don't even force the change upon people and give them a choice to go back to the old look of reddit with a simple button. As I said, if it is for making it default, thats fine, but we at least want the choice to go back to the old icon style as a opt out setting.

It's actively worse for my non-colorblind eyes, and as my sight will get worse over the years as well as the non-stop use at work and leisure, identifying statuses will be harder and harder.
Yes, @AngelRose , we exist. we see colors but we don't see very sharp anymore. And I couldn't for the last 2 months on tablet, discern that there was a triangle in the middle of the streaming status. I still can't properly find the difference between streaming and offline/invisible.
Thanks for telling us that you think of all users and then casually leave us out who were hindered by this update.
Give us a toggle, which worked well enough before. Or let us manually edit the icon files!
Since there was (and I need to reiterate this) a colorblind mode before, taking away this option was change for change's sake, marketed as an accessibility update.

I agree with this completely, revert back to the old icons or at least make the new ones a toggleable option. I only use discord on my mobile now (as I downloaded an old version apk and disabled updates) because of this ui change.

I also personally dislike the new status icons for Do Not Disturb and Invisible. I don't really care about Idle, and Online is still the same, but I definitely agree with you. However, these icons were most likely added for the purpose of colorblind people being able to easily see the status of users without hovering over the icons. While that can be pretty nice, I feel that these icons should be off by default and there should be a setting to enable it somewhere in settings. I am hoping Discord sees this and applies this in a new update, as I would find it convenient for Discord users both colorblind and not colorblind.

@AngelRose While I can somewhat see what you are trying to point out, he is in no way being toxic. He was just saying that everyone does not require accessibility settings just because some people do. On top of that, Blue has a very good point. He posted a link (https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360048067071-New-offline-status-indicators-are-not-good-for-people-who-are-prone-to-trypophobia) with the statement of how some people would like this reverted for the purpose of their own accessibility purposes. This does not mean that this change should be 100% reverted, but rather that it should be an optional setting so both colorblind and non-colorblind users could be satisfied. Calling users out for being toxic without doing your research is ironically pretty toxic. Lastly, let's read this statement:
"You may complain about an aesthetic change to a social media platform, but we get used to it, right?"
Well, people are able to use different themes, plugins, or find ways to get around this. Some people have disorders (Such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) where some changes may trigger them. Please think before you falsely call people out.

Please, please, please let us toggle these. I don't care if they're on by default, but I want my circles back.

I made a separate thread about this as I didn't notice this, so it got locked.
But I agree with this! Add the toggle back... Maybe make it on by default but don't force colorblind mode on all!
And the idle icon will take like a year to get used to... This thread already got 50 upvotes so it should be at least considered. I liked it as before, with the colorblind mode toggle but now they removed the toggle and forced the colorblind mode to everyone. I mean, colorblinds are not entirely blind so they can at least navigate to settings and turn on colorblind mode... Also the streaming mode icon is same as the offline with just a different color, so colorblinds will still confuse streaming mode with offline. So please, can we get the toggle back?4 -
I agree with adding the toggle back... even if it's "opt-out of colourblind" rather than "opt-in to colourblind" it doesn't matter, just please give us the option! I find the invisible/offline mode one deeply unsettling... which is very unfortunate as that is what I and most of my friends use at all times when chatting. It makes me so uncomfortable, I guess the trypophobia is kicking in with it, but it makes me want to not use discord entirely. Accessibility is great, but only if it's for all users, not just one group of them. Please give us the toggle back.

Yeah I don't quite like the permanent colourblind mode, it was nice and simple before, but now it is just annoying to look at. It is funny how I toggled it on to try it out even though I am not colourblind, and then the next day I can't turn it off.

I would like to see the new indicators as a toggle option. Like some others have expressed, the offline indicator is very disruptive for me (trypophobia).
