Discord Server UIs Suggestions/Feedback
Hello Discord Community and Staff!
I love discord for it's many many capabilities but also have a kind of wish-list of things that I think could make things on discord even better. Please remember these are opinions of mine and anyone who is able to comment on this is allowed to have their own opinions as well.
Firstly, Sub-Categories: I own a server and manage some of my friend's servers so I have quite the taste for setting things up, as do many members of Discord's community, but something that nags at me is a need for subcategories. I personally think this is becoming very necessary within many of the community servers and would also be a major improvement for personal ones as well. I'm sure I cannot be the only one who thinks this... the categories and channel lists just pile up so very fast when there's a ton of topics and sub-topics to be covered in any given server. Currently, I have resorted to making empty categories in my own server with many minus symbols and equal-sign symbols to help sort my server into more generalized topics, but even as it is, it still feels very clustered and that there is a need for minimizing by sub categories.
Secondly, Better Channel/Category Management: It has come to my attention that having a server with a need to downsize and eliminate unused categories and channels is actually kind of a hassle. I recently cut down on the amount of channels and categories I had for the sake of making a more generalized atmosphere of the topics held within my personal server, but it had to be done one piece at a time. This means I had to go through the process of selecting and deleting every single channel AND category one by one. Perhaps add a "delete category and channels within category" option of sorts, or heck maybe even add this under server settings for those who have access to global server settings for each server (i.e. server owners, and co-admins). There simply needs to be a more efficient way of putting together or deconstructing a server.
Thirdly, and perhaps least importantly, a Media Handling Tool of some sort: I call this least important probably because this will never really be integrated, but I will throw this out there; a window in discord that will allow users to edit files to serve several purposes, such as: Trimming files to reduce their size, editing and creating server emojis, and ease of access content posting. These features would benefit users who have trouble sharing content that would otherwise exceed Discord's data limits (in which I am referring to "This File Is Too Powerful" error popups). I feel that the Discord team who manages Discord's many many features would understand this, and as a Windows 10 user, I can't help but feel sad that the 30 second game clips recorded with the Microsoft Game Bar (or whatever the win+G shortcut is during gameplay) is always impossible to share on a server. If I'm not mistaken, even Level 1 servers that have 2 Nitro Boosts cannot support them due to size limitations. If Discord's virtual chat server system restricts file sizes on servers, then why not implement data management strategies to a server's local settings, which leads to my final suggestion...-
Finally, Data/Chat History Management: Which is simply a method in which servers with messages that date to a user-set amount of time would be permanently deleted, unless pinned using Discord's already existent message pinning feature. I could understand a need for this since community servers have hundreds to thousands of users on at any given time chatting. If I am correct, I would imagine servers such as the ever growing MINECRAFT community server would have a heavy amount of data that is cached somewhere on Discord's server rooms, which when you think about it, could either be huge or small, considering the amount of users who are actively making and running servers, but also servers being free to create must mean this is not that much of an issue. The main premise for this feature suggestion would tie back with my third one, allowing more hefty file sizes to be shared to servers between friends, families and all sorts of communities. I understand that Discord Nitro service is designed to make file size limits marketable, but in reality getting everyone to put money towards a server that they may or may not own is not easy, especially in this day and age. I would imagine a feature like this to allow a range of data sizes for posting different files on servers, which would allow Discord to market data limitations on a more community user friendly basis.
Phew, that was a lot of typing. Anyway, I really enjoy using Discord, and I hope too see it grow and develop into something even greater for the large community it holds. I also hope that maybe even this reaches the Discord Developer teams or whoever makes features and such for the application. Finally I also thank everyone in this community who may or may not stop and read my entire feedback post because it probably would make up a good page or two on a text document such as Microsoft Office Word or Google Docs, and I really didn't realize it would be this huge.
