Two-factor Authentication (2FA) - Why not just a text message with a code instead of downloading an app?

Hello,

I find the requirement to download a Google app to enable 2FA as ridiculous.  I absolutely refuse to download such an app.

I do not understand why receiving a text message (SMS) with a code is not an option for 2FA.  Banks and credit card companies use this method, and I should think they have more at stake but are very comfortable in employing this method of 2FA.

I hope Discord can offer this as an option in the future.
