SMS Verification / Account Verification

Here is an example of a terrible end-user experience with the SMS Verification feature.

 

  • Have an existing Discord account with a verified phone number
  • Create secondary account
  • Accidently verify secondary account with same phone number as the primary account
  • You're now locked out of your primary account until verifying it with a different phone number (what if you don't have a different phone number?)
  • Remove SMS verification from secondary account to now use it on primary account to re-verify it and log back in
  • Now you're restricted from using that number for potentially DAYS receiving the error message "This number was recently used on another account", with no other option to verify the account or ETA given, meaning you cannot even LOG IN or use Discord whatsoever on your account while this restriction is in place.
  • You can use the old number again, but as mentioned in the above point, only when the (perhaps warranted, but unnecessarily lengthy) restriction is lifted which can be days which is very frustrating for a very simple mistake which is probably made all the time by many users on a daily basis.

tl;dr locked out of a Discord account for potentially days for making the terrible mistake of using the same number twice on a different account, even if you then remove the number from that account after realizing your "mistake". Why not cut down that phone-number restriction to an hour or two instead of days, especially if the number was removed from the other account? Googling this issue brings up reddit posts with people complaining about this same issue. Discord is a decent piece of software but things like this make me want to scream sometimes.

    The problem starts where discord wrongly assumes that 'identity' is linked to a 'phone'.

    Extremely stupid.

    How is it that there is another account with my number assigned. So when I need to SMS validate the account it keeps saying it An existing account already using this number.

    When you use the phone number to login to remove it it says, Verify by email…….

    WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Your system is BROKEN!
