100 Server Limit (2018-2021)

For as long as anyone can remember (in my research) if not from the start (2015), a user could only be in 100 servers. The 100 server cap may have been a reasonable number for when discord was mainly for gaming purposes, however, over the years discord and its users grew. There are more servers to discover and checkout and some people have hit the 100 server limit (not saying this wasn't a problem before (this applies to every time I say people have hit the limit), read the Predecessors section). The limit should be increased.

During this time discord continued to grow and people hit this limit and made posts about it, these include:

- 2020 | Pandemic + New Discord Model
The famous 2020 pandemic and lockdowns moved a lot of things digitally online. Many new groups that made the superior decision to continue fully or have some part on discord require servers. These new servers take server slots and some people may hit the limit.
This year discord made big steps to more formalize the company and expand out of just a place for gamers.
In March 2020, Discord changed its motto from "Chat for Gamers" to "Chat for Communities and Friends". This was part of their response to an increase of users as a result of the [pandemic] which also included the introduction of server templates. + reduce the number of gaming in-jokes #Wumpus
Discord is growing even more and now is moving to all-purpose communication and is hosting even more types of communities like studying groups, art groups, etc. This is great, but it also means more servers that either people have to join or more servers people want to checkout. However, the 100 server limit which hasn't been changed for years stops a user's growth.
- 2021
In 2021, what was said in the 2020 section will continue. More people will want to make servers for their own groups for various purposes.
- Developers
Me, being a discord developer I sometimes have to look at other people's servers to fix or testing things with my bots (This might not apply to all developers). Servers for the programing languages, libraries, questions and api servers also take multiple server slots, plus testing servers. For me 20% of my servers are related to developing. This number will be different more each developer but it still takes server slots.
- Events
This is another section I added. There have been new event servers this year. People who are interested in these servers + the offical ones would join them. Some events even require you to be in multiple servers. I know this is something optional but people who want prizes to win might not be able to make it.
The next section is for things I've seen across the predecessors posts. Not trying to be mean in any of them.
- Arguments
- Activity
This argument includes "How can I/you be active/check/see in all the servers", "I can barely keep up with [insert low number here]" or "I'll be a dead weight member". The first thing I want to say is if you can't handle multiple servers then maybe this post isn't for you. If this limit gets increased, you won't be forced to join more servers or be active in more servers. I find this irrelevant as this is for people who've hit or worried or just want the limit increased. You won't be affected if other people join more servers and you don't.
The second part of the argument. Some people are active and check on at least most of their servers. People can also be in support servers to ask questions, be in servers for giveaways, be in servers to get updates on bot or updates for developers, be in servers for emojis, be notified for things and many other reasons. If someone is in these servers, they'll surely not just forget about it. Not sending messages doesn't mean forgetting, an example of this is if you use the server's emojis.
- Lag/Ressources
Some people think that if this limit goes up they'll also be affected by this. Like in the previous argument, you staying in your current amount of servers and someone else joining more won't affect you.
If you want to join more servers and you're worried about this, then surely discord will optimize some things for their growth.
Comment any of your ideas or if you also want this to happen.

I agree with an increase or uncapping of the server limit.
I've been at the max cap of 100 for a while.
Regarding people that argue for activity, I'll paste something I've sent recently:
I don't see any reason to limit users at all. While there may be no point in lurkers and inactive members, I believe that is up to the server owners themselves to decide. I believe that there should always be more options, not less. You may not need to join many servers, but even if so, you do not have to. Just because you can doesn't mean you have to. Just because you don't need to doesn't mean you shouldn't. Just because you in particular do not see the point in an increased limit does not mean that others do.
As for me and the use cases I find for an increased limit, I will paste this here:
1) Games: Guilds/Clans
- Some game communities require communication between groups of players like guilds and clans. Many guilds and clans will have their own servers and communicate to other guilds and clans in their respective servers. This use case takes up a chunk of my servers.2) Games, Official Servers, Companies, Brands, Group Buys, etc.
- Certain stuff like group buys, interest checks, deals, maybe game updates, etc. require you to join the server to hear/learn about them.3) Emotes for Nitro Users
- A large chunk of my servers are for nitro emotes.4) Friends' servers
- I have a ton of friends who invite me to their servers. I may not be active in them, but it feels disingenuous to them to leave those servers. Since my server list is full (capped at 100), I can't join any other friends' servers. Especially with certain friends who make too many servers for little reason.3
