I just had this conversation with some friends today, where I was discussing the idea of user attributes, which could be set in the server itself.

My idea stemmed from the fact that many servers have a bunch of, as you put it, vanity roles. Roles which don't make use of the permissions system in the slightest, but instead exist for their side-effects: colour, information (by way of the role name), or even just as a pingable role for announcements. I think it would be even nicer if, because there are no permissions tied to these vanity roles, users could just assign any of the existing server vanity roles to themselves, or unassign them from themselves. Go one step further and, let's say for community servers, have certain vanity roles that are automatically assigned on join but then allow the user to remove it if they don't like it.

I feel like if we could branch the role system into functional versus aesthetic Discord would be a much easier place to manage. No more worrying about if an aesthetic role should be higher in the hierarchy or not since they won't have any permissions tied to them. This would mean they couldn't be displayed in the side bar, as the side bar currently displays by the role hierarchy, without some reworking of that, but at the very least seeing some semblance of non-functional roles, whatever they may be called, would be a very welcome feature.

+1 to this. Now with forced emotes next to your username whether you like it or not, I feel this is something that could be fixed with vanity roles that would allow users to pick a vanity role they've been given instead of being stuck with the top-ranked vanity role they own.
