Addition of the feature to clone Categories
Cloning Categories: A helpful server-crafting tool
Why should this feature be added?
For quite some time, Discord has been constantly rolling-out updates to increase the application's performance, appearance and overall configuration. However, we've had some landmark updates that are genuinely missing one thing: The ability to clone entire categories. We've already accomplished the ability to clone a server's template, channels etc. But what about categories?
What are some examples of how this feature could help?
Discord, as many of you probably know by now, is a massive platform that has helped people worldwide connect, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are thousands of servers in hundreds of communities, with numerous users communicating each day. Larger servers, like those of gaming communities, would likely appreciate the ability to clone a category. There are a lot of benefits, too!
- Gaming Communities: Some gaming communities, such as those for ROBLOX, Minecraft, Fortnite, etc. Want the ability to make numerous categories because these games have niche communities filled with clans who organise events, or might have teams.
For example: Let's say that I have a tutorial category for a Minecraft Discord server that tells people how to build a house; I have multiple channels with different tutorials, etc. But now, what if I want to make another tutorial category? I have to start from scratch and spend so much time creating channels and flip between my new and old categories just to match-up the roles and permissions. Very time-consuming!
- Study Groups: During the pandemic, there has been a rapid increase in the use of Discord and other applications for online education. In some countries, schools are using Discord as an online classroom. Some administrators might have categories for different subjects, different schedules, etc.
Another example: If I'm a teacher and I have a Discord server for my students, I might teach the same subject (History, Maths, Science etc), but have different classes throughout the day. So, let's say I have a category for Class A, but now I have to make another category for Class B: Once again, it is very time-consuming and wasteful to have to keep flipping between channels, roles, server settings, etc.
The bottom line.
My point is, by now, hopefully, you can agree: Duplication of categories would be a life-saving ability to have on Discord. It negates the amount of time it takes to configure a server, especially for large communities, but it also helps server owners/administrators to maintain their servers, too.
