I'm confused about role permissions

For example if I have a role with no permissions whatsoever, and I give the role to a tester account that has no other roles. The tester could still do stuff and send messages in channels. The channel has everything set to the default slash, and I think that means it defaults to the role perms. So how can the other account with no permissions still do stuff and send messages? Why isn't it working?
