Account verification

Hi. I signed up to discord a few months ago and I was managing my server. I was just adding an emoji when the page went blank and it says it needs my phone number to verify my account. I've never been asked to do that before, only with email. I tried to exit the page but it won't let me. Can anyone explain what was happening?
