Backup Codes

So 2FA issues are a massive outburst. If someone skips a step or doesn’t know what to do or loses the codes they are screwed at the present time. I’m sure you guys and every forum in here has 1 or 2 people who have lost accounts due to this. So here is my idea. Upon your initial activation of 2FA instead of just showing the button and making it seem less important unless you actually read a forum before activating it and let’s face it your users aren’t going to go to a forum to figure out your auth in and outs before they’re already screwed. That said when the activation is completed you send an email to the respective email address of the account that forces the download of backup codes to the device. Or if on mobile sends them via SMS. This would save your users from losing accounts and having to deal with the loss of money spent on Nitro like so many people have because you decide a button on an app is going to stick out enough for something so crucial to the safety and access to the account that even if provided with the most crystal clear verification of the accounts owner you refuse to restore.

    i agree with this 100%, i wasn’t able to connect my phone number due to issues with my phone so yesterday i had to get a new phone and i recently enabled 2FA, but of course i don’t have the key or any backup codes, and i wish it would send a backup code to your email after a certain amount of try’s or after you request is, instead of leaving it up to the auth code or your phone number. anyways i love this post and i hope discord can see this, nice job!

    Agreed and the fact that they will only refund nitro if it was in the last five days makes it even worse.

    Unfortunately I am losing my account today due to Factory Reset issue and Lack of Knowledge on 2FA. I had my account for over 2 years and when initially making the account, I never got the pop up message as you do now so I was unaware that I needed to turn on send code via SMS. I had so many memories and friends on that account and am extremely upset to have it deleted. I wish it was made along clearer before so this could've never happened. To anyone that reads this, please make sure you allow Discord to send you a Code via SMS when turning on 2FA. I know this was 8 months ago but...hope everyone has an amazing day! Better than mine atleast

    I agree i lost my acc to 2fa, which was really upsetting. So hopefully they add a feature to recover your backup codes or something.
