Linux App Consistently Crashes throughout the day
Wading through the weeds of the internet I have seen many threads on the linux Discord app crashing a lot.
I created a general title so hopefully everyone can aggregate here to create a louder voice for a fix.
I am running Fedora 32 with stock Gnome.
I have all of the Ram, Resources are not an issue.
Discord silently crashes many times a day and leaves my rants with no audience.
Many of my fellow Linux users have this issue,
Please Fix this Discord, I am happy to send core files and logs to help.

I have this issue, too. For me I think it's only ever happened while I am connected to a voice channel, but it's random when it happens. It could be in the middle of a word, during complete silence, or immediately after I connect.
Also running Fedora (but Fedora 31) with Gnome

I've been fighting this issue for months. I've tried different versions from the Ubuntu repos, snap, flatpak, and from the discord site. All crash randomly (and silently) when in voice chat. The app completely stops and I haven't been able to capture logs of the event.
I'm not sure about the other posters, but for me the app will run flawlessly for days on end until I use voice chat. Then I get between 10-30 minutes of use before it crashes.

Same here on Fedora 32.
The app crashes during play with "Lutris & Wine". It shortly flashes the screen almost like going out of fullscreen and return to fullscreen within the game in a millisecond.AMD Ryzen 3600X system

Reason: Discord killed by SIGSEGV0 -
Same here, Fedora 32, RPMfusion repo version - random and frequent crashes when using voice chat. I'm wondering if this is related to glibc and Chromium, as this seems to have been a problem generally in recent months, see also:
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360057802072-Reporting-a-bug-with-video-playback
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1773289
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=253424
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/fwml8f/do_any_of_you_experience_intermittent_crashes/Nothing concrete, it's just a possibility, however I'm going to try and test out the canary client version tomorrow to see if that suffers from the same problem:
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035675191-Desktop-PTB-and-Canary-Clients0 -
Same issue here ! I am also using RPM fusion repo version.. I will also try canary version and lets see if it makes the difference however I think the issue will still presist as it looks like some dependency issue as HeWhoWatches said.. I will update If I find the solution here..

Apologies, I forgot to post an update - I did try the Canary version yesterday and it crashed almost immediately when using voice chat so it seems to still be an issue in that version too.
0 -
HeWhoWatches You tried the canary tar.gz package ? So its most likely a dependency issue as changing discord versions don't help. Fedora 32 may have some dependency discord doesn't like. I tried appimage and flatpak which have no issue..
0 -
Hi, yes indeed, I tried the tar.gz package... I've installed the flatpak version and will give that a test sometime, fingers crossed. If the links posted previously are to be believed, it's glibc 2.31 to blame, and it looks like the flatpak runtime uses 2.30:
flatpak info com.discordapp.Discord
<snip>
Runtime: org.freedesktop.Platform/x86_64/19.08
Sdk: org.freedesktop.Sdk/x86_64/19.08

Last reference to glibc:* glibc: update to 2.30-2

Same with Ubuntu 18.04, it just crashes in a VC and it only on The DDE unofficial support version.
0 -
I remember clearly that this started when the 0.0.10 update hit. Before that, Discord was the most stable voice/video chat out there. Now it sucks. It doesn't matter what version I use.
0 -
Apologies I kept forgetting to add feedback to this post - I was able to test a week or two ago and the flatpak version of Discord does indeed work fine, being built against an earlier version of glibc.

Also... an update for Discord just processed on my PC. Flatpak version still using same runtime (org.freedesktop.Platform/x86_64/19.08), Discord version increased to v0.0.12:

I don't know about you guys, but I still have this problem. (0.0.12)

egjerlow This problem seems specific to Nvidia users as the crash is not there on Intel and AMD devices.. So its some issue discord is having with Nvidia drivers.... Also I can confirm that this does not happen on Xorg or Wayland on AMD or Intel... So also not a display server issue. I have all the 3 hardware stacks and this is only a nvidia issue. You can try appimage or flatpak version of discord if it works for you.. It could be Glibc too causing this with Nvidia..
0 -
@しゅりけん There is no NVIDIA graphics card on this PC - it's an Intel pc with Intel internal graphics.
0 -
@egjerlow
Then it's probably glibc... As I am using same package same version on every hardware same distro i.e fedora 33 crash does not happen maybe fedora 33 glibc doesn't cauz the issue... On my nvidia hardware glibc hasn't been updated yet..What's your distro and glibc version..
1 -
the app is crashing on fedora 32 :(
tried the flatpak install
0 -
@gbrennon it is because of the latest glibc use tar.gz from discord website or try fedora 33 as it has latest version of glibc and probably won't crash.. in using Fedora 33 with no issues.. if you want to stick with F 32 try tar.gz as it should use bundled glibc

It's not just nvidia. I'm running linux 59 kernel with manjaro linux, and it's crashing with the amdgpu driver installed. Only notice it in voice calls. I installed from snap.

Id’ like to say that I have exhausted many leads on settings, updates, and patches.
This has been going on for 3/4 of a year...I too noticed this started after the Linux version 10 stable as well.
I’ve investigated programs related to notifications and drivers.I wonder if this crash issue is potentially related to the andro issue (current build 50.2(1348)), where voice calls spontaneously and suddenly go silent?
(Leaving the call or switching voice channels is the only way to hear (or sometimes be heard) again. Turning off router QoS for me was sadly not a working fix for either of these issues)I'd like to mention that this kind of crash behavior was ALSO happening on a previous tower running elementary 5.1 as well...
[Previous PC: 4gen Intel Dual Core i3-4160, h81 express (12gb RAM) with integrated graphics]I have tried A LOT of the ideas in other posts. Some of the mentioned fixes people offered had incapacitated my system beyond salvage (incompatible versions I guess) and so I've have reinstall fresh several times over the last 8 months. Each freshly updated install is susceptible to the Linux voice chat crash bug. I looked into OEM AMD graphics drivers for this graphics card, but attempting to bypass script checks to force an install was also problematic (AMD driver package not officially supported on elementaryOS, meant for ubuntu) so I'm using elementary's built in drivers. I tried Discord’s QoS setting, disabling acceleration & OpenH.264, etc. I did investigate a crash report (listed below).

Current Discord versions are:
Stable 72586 (e948c6b) - Host 0.0.12 (.deb file from official discord website)
AND
Canary 72722 (b01f27d) - Host 0.0.116 (.deb file from official canary discord website)
(donadigo's Eddy v1.2.2 app was used for both installations)1 -
If I launch the app from the console it doesn't crash. Don't know why. At least I have a workaround. Hope it works you too!

I only run it via terminal, and it crashes all the time. I've even gone to the trouble of creating a looping script that restarts the app automatically -_-
What distro are you on, Emilio, and which package of discord are you running? (rpm fusion, flatpack, tar.gz from official site, etc)0 -
I also crash when joining VC's on Kubuntu 21.04,
Discord crashed with SIGABRT in std::sys::unix::abort_internal()
Weird, I got a crash report and I can now join VC's somehow the crash report actually fixed it

Same with:
Discord: Stable 97097 (0ca818c)
Linux: 5.6.19-159 / 5.13.15-194
OS: Solus OS 4.30 -
I'm reporting this since 3 years to the support but they don't care at all...
If you just need to voice chat and use the chat you can use ripcord that is at least stable... (or web version... but a bit buggy to me)
And discord I don't care you can't force us to use your client if it's a total mess...

I'm on Fedora 35 with
- Intel CPU
- AMD GPU
- Discord 0.0.16 from rpm fusion
- Xorg
and it crashes silently about every 20 minutes whenever I'm using the voice chat.
My friends who are on Ubuntu don't have this problem.
If I start from the terminal it's about 40 min till it crashes. In the terminal it didn't show any errors or crash log.
Only:
Failed to get crash dump id.

I had a similar problem.
Have you tried the flatpak version? I switched to that (from the rpm version) and my crashes seem to have completely disappeared. While not ideal it has definitely improved my use of Discord.

Well that's what I'm using actually... I need to disable hardware acceleration to avoid that kind of problem... Still slow but at least not crashing really often

I had this problem running Debian 10 with Gnome, and when upgrading to Debian 11 the problem went away. This is not the flatpak version, and hardware decoding was disabled in Debian 10 without any improvement. I am also using non-free nvidia drivers, if this has anything to do with it.
Fellow Debian users might want to try upgrading to get rid of this issue.
If glibc is at cause, for reference on Debian 11 I currently have glibc 2.31-13, compared to 2.28-10 for Debian 10.0
