@... you suggest that there is a difference between freedom of speech and hate speach i have aldeady shown that to be false (see US supreme court ruling R A V vs City of St Paul) Were speech that is spreading hate is allowed. However as has been in US law since the start Speech that directs violence or other actions of harm are not protected. Discord is a US based company (Protected by article 230) they are not seen as a publisher so discord will not be held responsible for anything someone says. When social media company's do ban people for saying something such as "All blacks are criminals" that is not within there power to do so says the same article that protects them. Countless death threats go out every day and do nothing about any day you can log onto to twitter and find thousands of death threats and are illegal and twitter does nothing about. the issue that people are concerned with is selective enforcement.

It's actually not a targeted attack or anything, it's because me and my friends say the n word (hard R) 13 million times with bots. (and also Discord has lots of white supremacy and racism)

It is annoying to see white supremacy stay around on Discord as long as it does, hopefully we can overcome this problem. This is certainly not a racist move by Discord or anything like that.

It starts with preventing hate speech and then goes to preventing people from talking to protect business interests (like what they did to wsb discord and made a racism excuse)

@... What is an isn't a slur changes over time. The contexts for the use of words matter. The reason this is even a conversation is because the word isn't just a slur anymore. So you can't argue that just saying it is hate speech because clearly its not used simply as a slur.

It starts with preventing hate speech but that’s completely subjective. Eventually anything that threatens the people in power like the government will start declaring criticism towards the government as hate speech. The same can be said about discord. The wall streetsbets discord was taken down for racism and slurs and such when that actually wasn’t the case. Discord used that as an excuse to protect business interests. Limiting speech in any capacity opens Pandora’s box

cheuriibee im saying that limiting words because it is hate speech leads to censorship. This happens most obviously with governments but also happens with digital platforms to cover their interests. Discord defines what is hate speech and what is a slur (on their platform )which allows them to justify taking down just about anything with, hey its hate speech. Thats why i used the wsb comparison

Except your wrong. Plenty of people don't use it as a slur. In music. As greetings. Either you are somehow unaware of this or your being dishonest on purpose. What is and isn't offensive depends on society at the time. Its not just a slur and that's a fact. The word is historically a slur. And plenty of people are racist now and use it as a slur. But there are a large number of people who don't, ESPECIALLY in the black community. So if you really don't understand then you should probably educate yourself more before you advocate for things that would cause problems for people not participating in hate speech. The only reason I'm taking an issue with you stance is because you seem to be unaware of the consequences of what your advocating for @....

Nobody said that's the only way it was used. You were the one that kept claiming it could only be used as a slur. You keep saying things like hate speech =/= free speech and you kept acting as if the word is only used as a slur. People using it offensively doesn't change the fact some people don't. And your advocating for banning people that use the word period. In other words you either were unaware of the fact that this would affect people not participating in hate speech OR you don't care. On top of that this would overwhelmingly effect black people. I don't care at all that your black. If anything the fact that your black makes me disappointed that you don't know any better. You would group black people that say the n word casually the same way anyone would use dude, with people that are racist and use it as an insult? Are you serious? You are not educating anyone. If anything people like you make it more difficult for people to define hate speech and make others aware of what hate speech really is. In refusing to recognize the difference in the use of the word your so called "education" is making other people that don't know any better unable to see that there is a difference when the word is used certain ways. Saying people shouldn't say it at all is fine. But pretending its only used as a slur isn't you actually harm peoples ability to combat hate speech and peoples understanding of hate speech.@...

I'm disappointed because clearly based on your previous statements in this comment thread you were making no distinction between actual hate speech and just saying the word. You didn't start making that distinction until very recently and i was calling you out for not making that distinction. You can argue that using the word in general is a problem without pretending its only ever used as a slur which you were doing prior to the last 5 days. Nobody said anything about us having a hive mind. If your black I would assume you know more about the culture and that you know better than to say things that would get black people banned for hate speech. You literally didn't start acknowledging that the word isn't just a slur until like 5 days ago man so don't pretend that you weren't arguing as if the word is only a slur. That is my issue with you right now. Like i said previously, you can acknowledge that the word is sometimes used as a slur and sometimes it isn't and STILL explain why its usage is problematic and how it is used in hate speech or cyberbullying. Instead you made blanket statements about the usage of the word that will clearly misinform people who read your comments and don't know any better. Someone who knows nothing about black culture could easily read your previous statements and think "Oh ANY use of the n word is hate speech". And you sitting here saying your black as a way to give yourself some sort of authority on the subject. That's why I'm disappointed in you because despite being black you fail to recognize how what you say can be interpreted by other people and how you can damage the discourse and make it harder to combat hate speech. Even if i agreed with you 100% on literally anything pertaining to this subject i wouldn't do what you did because as a black person im aware of how what i said could negatively impact my own community. @...

A black person should be able to say the n word to another person dont tell a black person not to say the n word you sound ignorant

  • BlueSonic10

@dimeji Really though these people are so pathetic they have to try and justify them being rascist and saying the N word, just don't say it at all and just let African people say it it's not a right taken away from you it's called being decent. The fact you guys are so butt hurt you can't say the n word is absurd and I don't care if you don't use it as a slur it's rascist, just say "the n word" and keep jokes in your head because your cringe af anyways. If you're a white kid crying because s black kids called you the n word that I guess it just your own medicine, the things people do now days to prove stupid ass shit that they believe in there head to justify there shit. These people are just as bad as woke people.

Its really not about people wanting to use the word. The issue with everybody here is that all of you people getting mad about the word refuse to acknowledge that there are plenty of people that don't use the word as a slur and are advocating for having people get banned for it. Alot of people that don't use it as a slur are also black. So what your advocating for will literally get a ton of black people banned despite them not being racist. I don't know why thats so hard for you people to understand. The fact that you people refuse to even acknowledge that the word is NOT always used as a slur is inherently harmful to the discorse involving this subject. You people sit on your high horses and pretend that black people that use the word as a greeting are somehow equivalent to a racist using a slur. When you refuse to acknowledge that there is in fact a difference you literally do harm to the world. You enable racism. You give racists cover by comparing people that aren't racists to racists. Every single mf i responded to in this threat said back at me "Oh i never said the word is only a slur" despite the fact that you only started acknowledging that AFTER i called you out for it. @cherubii you were never arguing context matters until after i said something about it. Even when others argued context matters you just shot it down with "Why be racist my dude". Literally just about every person in this thread has some of the worst takes on this i've ever seen. I haven't even gotten to calling out the really stupid stuff like the original poster and some of the other very harmful takes is because some of you want to pretend context doesn't matter and that people are just being racist even when they are not.

  • [Academy City] Touma

@... you explicitly stated and "A slur is a slur no matter what" And equated that black people using the world as a greeting and in other contexts to actually being racist several times throughout this post. You didn't say context matters until i responded to you multiple times. If you can't see how equating people not using the word as a slur and people actually using the word as a slur is harmful i don't know what to say to you. You can argue that nobody should say the word in any contexts. But you HAVE to acknowledge that some people don't use at is a slur. And equating these two things is harmful because you make it harder for people to even tell what real racism is. This discussion isn't pointless because the ideas you spread regardless of platform effects how other people think and what they believe. People that are sitting here complaining about some people not getting to say the word based off skin color. And arguing oh either everyone can use it or nobody can use it are missing the point. Some people don't use the word as a slur. Context does matter. Once these points are acknowledged we can move on to the more important discussion. Once everyone can recognize this point we can get onto actually identifying people that are really being racist. That is the important discussion that needs to be had. Now that you finally said context matters @... you have to also acknowledge that MOST of the people in this discussion really can't tell the difference. And that is a problem. When you equate black people saying the word casually with people that are just using it as a slur you make this problem worse. And even though there are no discord staff reading this you have to keep in mind. What if they did. What if they banned people for just saying the N-word. Are you okay with a large number of black users of this platform getting banned over a word that they weren't even using as a slur?

@... What is said here does matter because people spread their ideas here and then people go out and act on these beliefs. When you equate some people not using the word as a slur to people using the word as a slur you are doing harm. ESPECIALLY when the group of people that generally don't use it as a slur are black.

  • [Academy City] Touma

@... Well luckily im not really concerned about reaching the discord staff. I was concerned with the beliefs being spread in this thread and the effect that they would have on the real world. Most of the comments on here either enable harmful beliefs or are outright harmful. The main one im pushing back against is several people on here equating black people saying the N word to racists using it as a slur at black people. The fact that people here keep doing this makes me think they don't care about racism. They are just mad that since they are not black they are assumed to be racist when they say the n word. I keep responding to you  specifically @... because you were enabling them with some of your responses.

@... What are you even talking about. Nobody said you were white and nobody said you are racist. My point is "Stop comparing black people using a word to racists using a word". Your point of "find a new word" doesn't matter. Acknowledge other people use the word. Stop saying the word is only used as a slur. Simple.

okay, how about we let a person whos actually black speak about this, and lets see what their opinion is.
the funny part is that nonblack people are agreeing and saying "yeah yeah yeah!!" when you they arent even black, thats sad.

nonblack people cant say the nword, black people can. end of story. thank you.

I'm just curious about the logistics if the proposed: "nonblack people cant say the nword, black people can"
Somebody says the N word. Many ppl report it. How then does discord decide if they are black or not?
Have every black person register with Discord as Black? How is this even determined?
Have a corporate committee on blackness?
Send an admin a photo and let them decide?
What about mixed? Can they say it? Or is there some threshold? 50%? 25%. Again, how is this judged?
What if your spouse is Black? Is that suffient to be able to say it?
How do you prevent fake black IDs? Would it be acceptable to let a few racists use it if they get fake ids? What about blacks that say ut as a slur? Do they lose their black card?
Would it truly benefit a community to let a corporation determine their membership?
Maybe determine not by the speaker, but by the context? Greetings would be ok. Slurs would be an issue. But only Blacks can use it as a greeting, so back to proving your black identity.
At least with an all or none policy it is enforceable.
If you could decide to let everyone say it freely, or ban it completely, which would you choose? Where is the potential for harm the greatest?
