Mp4 files as profile pictures

Mp4 files take considerably less space then gifs and can have a better image quality in most cases so I dont understand why we cant have an option to use mp4. I had a 4 megabyte video file and when i converted it into a gif that file was 25 megabytes. Please someone explain.
