Increase the Discord FRIENDS List Limits from 1000 to 2000 or more!
Hello! It's so annoying to have a limited 1000 friend list, especially for Twitch Streamers or Youtube streamers. What if I have more than 1000 friends?
If I'm in 100 servers, I can only make 10 friends per server before I hit 1000. Now with Nitro users being allowed 200 servers, that means I can only have 5 friends per server. What if I want to have more friends per server? It's very limiting and I hate having to delete old friends (who are still on friendly terms with me and chat with me) in order to make room for new friends.
PLEASE UP THE FRIEND LIST LIMIT TO 2000! https://i.imgur.com/kPTKGyL.png

This seems incredibly pointless. For one, the max number of close friendships any given person can maintain is somewhere between 3-5, psychologically. At 1,000 you would have to spend 83 hours a week talking on discord just to spend 5 minutes chatting with each person on your friends list. There are 168 hours in a week. Assuming you sleep for just 6 hours a day, that's 42 hours a week asleep, if you work at least part time or are in education for another 6 hours a day 5 days a week that's another 30 hours. That leaves in the most optimal week a little over 90 hours, but let's be real here, the free time you have is probably a lot closer to 30-40 hours a week.
You cannot maintain 1,000 friendships, and as such there's no reason for the friends list to be extended. You would have to quite literally live on Discord, which isn't healthy and shouldn't be encouraged by the developers.

I've been using discord for 5 years and have like 60 friends still added (I clear out my friendslist every now and then) and only 10 that i actually talk too, Like 5 if its the friends i talk too consistently. Listen to the person above, Clear out your friendslist and get over yourself

DUDE, you can't tell me what I can't do in my free time. DISCORD IS MY LIFE! I spend 10 hours per day on Discord.
Also, I have really close friends that I talk to once per FEW months, but when we DO message, we trust each other and talk like close friends.
I don't HAVE to talk to a person EVERYDAY to keep him/her on my friend list, I can have them as my contacts and hit them up every couple months, but I still want to KEEP THEM ON MY FRIEND LIST so that I can message them WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT!
5 FRIENDS PER SERVER IS NOT ENOUGH. What if I befriended 30 people per server, I want to KEEP THEM ON MY FRIEND LIST. They send me a friend request, and if I reject it, I seem rude. Then sometimes I want to add someone, but I CAN'T ADD THEM.
It's networking. FACEBOOK allows thousands of friends, I saw a Facebook person with 1476 friends.
Why can't Discord?
I've been using discord for 5 years and have like 60 friends still added (I clear out my friendslist every now and then) and only 10 that i actually talk too, Like 5 if its the friends i talk too consistently. It takes hours to delete 100 friends, because I have to backscroll per deletion. So just up the friend limit.
I actually KNOW and TALK TO all 1000 friends within the past 6-12 months. TIME TO INCREASE THE LIMIT.

Also you don't have to be FRIENDS with someone to have them on your friend list, you just need it for their connection when you leave a server they're in (and other people have server DMs disabled.) And it helps too when you try to search their name to DM, their name comes up easier if they're on your friend list.

To weigh in real quick. I think there's a few arguments for raising the friend limit beyond what it currently is.
You cannot maintain 1,000 friendships, and as such there's no reason for the friends list to be extended.
The friends list represents more than just a list of "friends." It's more akin to a phone book that allows contact to people irrespective of user permission settings and user guild DM settings. it allows those in large public guilds to disallow DM's from everyone in that guild except for "friends." If you're in several large public servers and have been around for a while, it's unrealistic to hit the 1,000 friend limit.
I also don't subscribe to the notion that psychological reasoning can be nicely be applied to a technical feature. Otherwise you can make the argument of lowering the friends list down to any arbitrary number.
An other argument is that Discord doubles many limits for Nitro subscribers. The 2,000 character limit for messages is 4,000. The 100 server limit is 200 if I remember correctly. Doubling the friends list would be inline with that. I believe many of the arguments against doubling the friends could also be applied to doubling the server list. As someone who's decently active on server, I've never been active on more than 8-10 Discord servers at one particular time, and I can't fathom someone necessarily needing 200 servers, but Discord has doubled it regardless as a nice to have.

I agree, the friend limit should be increased, as a drug dealer based in California who uses discord as the main method of communication with my clients.I have a large amount of clients, some come and go but its nice to keep them all on the friends list, I often tend to hit the limit cap and need to manually search for old customers and remove them, only to later re - add them soon again, this is very annoying, please fix thanks :)

Lmao i've been using discord for 4.5 years, i use it like less than 2 hours a day total (Typing, chatting and whatnot) maybe instead of trying to uphold 1000 friendships you should seek therapy and go outside.

Frankly, this is still nonsense. You can downvote me all you like, but it seems to me the only people who'd benefit from a limit increase are scammers and people who enjoy vapid relationships. You cannot have a close relationship with 1,000 people. This isn't me telling you what you can't do, this is plain fact. The fact that you said you'd delete the entire list in a heartbeat honestly just affirms what I'm saying. They aren't your friends, if they were, you'd pause before removing 1,000 of them all at once. The handful of people I'm actually friends with on Discord aren't people I'd delete on a whim. I talk to them nearly everyday, or bare minimum several times a week. There's no legitimate reason to have 2000 people added as friends, none. Logic dictates this is a pointless, vain feature with no practical value to the overwhelming majority of users.

Balzarine Mythus, what are you talking about, just shut up, I'm using my Discord for a lot of things like my work, 1.000 is nothing, scammers they can create a lot of discord account they don't have to work with just one discord they can move from discord to another. stupid people and stupid service i pay 10$ for this service such a shame...

youssef abla I can't imagine what legitimate business runs purely on Discord DMs. Regardless, your inability to scale your private enterprise doesn't constitute a valid argument in favor changing the friend list limit. Discord is not an e-commerce platform and was never designed to be used as such. It's primary appeal and target audience is people engaging in casual social interactions. There is no reason for every platform to accommodate every individual. Using Discord as your storefront is basically the same as attempting to use Steam for the same purpose, even when infinitely better alternatives already exist for the express purpose that you're complaining isn't being accommodated here.
Which begs the question, why not move your business to a platform that was literally designed to accommodate e-commerce? My guess is you're probably doing something that would run afoul of the websites regulations or TOS. Discord offers no real method to advertise your business or even process transactions. Why you'd do business on the platform is baffling, so I can only assume your business is either illegal or regulated in a way that you wouldn't meet the standards of said regulations.
There is zero reason that discord should be directing it's development to accommodate an absurdly small minority of individuals who already have a multitude of other options. There's no reason for Discord to try to do everything, it'd a good communications platform, it needs to focus on that. Not e-commerce.-1 -
Balzarine Mythus , You just wanna speak to be considered spoken, Discord does not belong to your father so shut up, i do whatever i want, my point here is to make Discord for everyone not for 1.000 only if you are lonely and you have 5 friends you don't suppose to speak or give you opinion because it's rude, i don't want to delete my old friends to add more and it's not your business why i have more than 1.000 or how much time i spend in discord everyone is free to do whatever he want as long as i don't hurt you right dumb?

youssef abla The infantile, nonsensical gibberish you've deteriorated into tells me this conversation is over.
FYI, upvoting your own comment is pathetic.0 -
Balzarine Mythus Exactly don't add stupid comments anymore and take of your own business, you are not the father of Wumpus so get away.

Not the answer ya'll want to hear but…….
Discord is about community servers and chat inside servers, DMs and Friends are just a small side feature not designed to be used in such a large scale way, maintaining effectively a private clone of the main discord functionality for your DMs is not feasible.
Instead of talking to “clients” etc in your friends list you should treat it like emails, you don't have every client saved as a contact - they just live inside your emails as a previous correspondent.
Either just have a DM conversation with them (You don't need to be friends to DM) or Create a private channel in your server with and set your clients permissions to access that server.
Then you're using discord for how its been designed and won't hit limit issues, as others mentioned reality is nobody has “1000 FRIENDS” you might have folk you're having private conversations but they're not your friends, you can have infinite DMs if you need and however many in your server or other servers. But your friend list is not needing to be 1000 long so increasing that limit for every user on discord makes no sense when there's a handful of users using it “wrong” - You're trying to bend it into something it is not :(

I also reached the 1000 Discord friends limit earlier. It really needs to be increased.

Argh but why do people care just let the suggestion be. If it does not affect you why do you have to prevent it from happening?
I support this even i don't need it.
EDIT: My suggestion is to leave the limit at 32768.

To anyone who believes that the friend limit is 1000 for technical reasons, it’s not. In short, It is an arbitrary limit. People have been above the limit for a while. As far as resources go, Discord is designed with this in mind. Someone who has 1000 friends won’t be more expensive on the servers than someone with 100 friends.
Here's why:
The client never requests a full list from the server, it loads users as you scroll. It does the same thing when you scroll through a list of members on a server. Servers can have up to 500K members for free. Many servers have much more, some reaching as high as 21M as of this post.
I want to note that if someone loads an un-cached list of 1000 people twice; it is the same as loading a list of 2000 people. If two people load a list of 1000 people, it is the same as one person loading a list of 2000. The amount of people who’d be reaching 1000 friends is tiny, and those reaching 2000 are even smaller. Usually, this is irrelevant. This logic only applies when list size matters.
Below are some points that show the expense of some events on Discord. Based on the communication between the client and the server.
Scrolling through a friend list of 1000 friends:
- 1kb-2kb per user loaded (1MB-2MB total)
- Only 1 person can do this
- Relatively rare event
(significantly more rare for those with a large friend list)
Scrolling through a member list on a server:
- 1kb-2kb per user loaded
- Any person on the server can do this
- Relatively common event
- Larger servers have larger lists and more people to scroll through them
Viewing an image/video that has been reposted/compressed countless times (usually memes)
- 50kb-200kb per image view
- 1MB-8MB per video view
- Everyone present in the chat can view it
- Many often sent at the same time
- Very common event (especially on larger servers)
Viewing an image/video that hasn’t been reposted/compressed many times (most things that aren’t memes)
- 1MB-25MB per image view
- 6MB-25MB per video view
- Everyone present in the chat can view it
- Many often sent at the same time
- Very common event (especially on smaller servers)
(most of the files I checked were on the higher end of the given ranges)
As you can see, a large friends list is pretty cheap and there is no technical reason to cap the friends list.
Disclaimer: I got these numbers from a small sample size. They are probably fairly close to the average. It’s not uncommon for files to fall outside the provided ranges.
Yes, I’m aware that there are other processes taking place on the servers. I do not think any of them would be significant enough to justify capping the friend list.
