Discord should add another method of verification, in case the user has forgotten their 2FA and backup codes.
Hello!
For context about this post:
Recently I changed my discord account's password. After I changed it, the password didn't work. I thought that it was weird but just said "you know what, I'll just reset my password". When I tried to reset my password, I was told to give a 2Fa and/or backup code. I didn't have these so I immediately panicked. I wasn't logged into any of my devices. I didn't have the backup codes, since my laptop reset months ago due to a mechanical issue, and there was no way I could log in without changing my password. Luckily, I was smart enough to use my phone and link it to my discord account. Unfortunately, this didn't help me, as the phone message I got said "Please check your e-mail for instructions on how to reset your password".
I contacted discord support, and was told that I couldn't get my account back. This left me heartbroken (yes over a discord account), as I had stored many memories with friends and had people I might never talk to again added on the account.
Ok, now that you've heard the backstory, here's my suggestion. Discord adds a way of verifying (2FA) with a user's phone. This way, if the user has a phone number linked, they can still retrieve their account, otherwise I think that having the phone number is pretty useless, other than security reasons. I think that this would be very good for people like me, who lost their backup and 2FA codes, and would generally encourage the community to keep their accounts safe with their phones.
Thank you for reading my suggestion,
I really hope something like this gets implemented, as I'd really like my account back, other than that there's nothing to the account, it just hold a few of my core memories.
I wish you all a pleasant and great day!
- Alex
