Improve the phone number removal process
Discord has this weird thing where if you link your phone number to your account, then the phone number is actually linked to the email address, and not the account itself. Therefore, when you modify your account email address, your phone number isn't linked to your account anymore, and you lose the phone verification.
If you forgot to unlink the phone number before modifying your email address — something no one is warned about — you then have to send an email from the former email address to ask for the phone number to be unlinked.
The issue is sometimes these email addresses are deleted before then, I'm thinking for example about school/university email addresses for example, therefore it makes the operation impossible, locking the phone number to the former email address forever, making the account unverifiable (unless the user gets a new phone number), which often prevents users from joining some servers.
There should be a better system in place, here are two suggestions to improve it:
• link the phone number to the account itself instead of the email address,
• put a system in place where a code is sent to the phone number to unlink the phone from the former address, instead of requiring an email from the latter.
You'll likely need to put the two options in place, the first one for the long term, and the second one to help the ones that got blocked by the current system.
