First message in chat log does not show date stamp

The first message in a private chat log does not show the date stamp. Every subsequent message shows the time stamp (in the left margin) and -- after some days have passed -- the date is shown as a line break thing. But you can't see the date of the very first message. This is apparently a UI failure. I should be able to see the date of the day when I first talked to somebody.

  Here you can see what I am describing: it's possible to see the date and time of every message except  the first one. You can't tell when I first spoke to this guy:
