Our Community Guidelines require that all adult content posted to Discord be kept behind an NSFW gate. Server owners can designate specific channels as being 18+ by adding an NSFW gate. Entire servers can now be classified as 18+ through the use of an NSFW server designation.
What is classified as an NSFW server?
Servers must be classified as NSFW if the community is organized around NSFW themes or if the majority of the server’s content is focused on 18+ content.
Discord will mark servers meeting these criteria as NSFW if they are not appropriately designated. We will notify server owners letting them know if their server has been impacted through a system message.
Note: The ability to self-designate a server as NSFW will be available to server owners soon!
What does this mean for NSFW server members?
No users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to join or view the content in NSFW servers.
18+ users attempting to join or access new NSFW servers on iOS will be required to opt-in to viewing NSFW content on desktop before being allowed into these spaces.
Additionally, a subset of NSFW servers that are specifically focused on explicit pornographic content will be blocked entirely on iOS. iOS users aged 18+ will only be able to join and access these dedicated pornography servers on the desktop and web versions of Discord.
What about NSFW Channels?
All Discord server owners must still apply NSFW gates to channels with mature content.
Having NSFW channels in a server does not, however, automatically mean that an entire server should be designated NSFW. An NSFW designation is only necessary if the majority of the server’s content is focused on 18+ content.
Appealing an NSFW server designation
Owners of communities designated NSFW by Discord will have to submit an appeal if they wish to have the NSFW server-level designation removed.
Server owners can write in to Trust & Safety’s support queue here:
- Select “Appeal my server’s NSFW designation”
- Enter the required details of the server
Server owners should provide their server’s ID as well as an explanation why their community should be considered safe-for-work (SFW). We cannot accept server-level appeals from anyone besides the server owner. Communities determined to be SFW will have the NSFW designation removed — at which time users between the ages of 13 and 17 will be allowed to rejoin.
Updating user’s age information
Users who identified as being between the ages of 13 and 17 during the age-verification process will not be allowed to join NSFW servers. 18+ users who have mistakenly identified as being between 13 and 17 can write in to Trust & Safety to have their age information updated.
Users should submit requests through this form: https://dis.gd/request
- Select “Appeals, age update, other questions”
- Choose the subcategory “Update my age information”
- Enter date of birth and submit the requested materials
Trust & Safety will not be able to update a user’s age without all the requested pieces of information. Additional details on updating age information can be found here.
