Default Safety Settings for Australian Users
All Australian users have a default teen-appropriate experience with enhanced safety settings. This means updated communications settings, restricted access to age-gated spaces, and content filtering, nearly all of which require age assurance to modify or access, including:
- Message Requests turned on by default, so messages from people you don’t know go to a separate inbox before reaching you
- Sensitive content filters enabled by default
- Age assurance is required to access age-gated content like age-restricted servers and channels.
Users can complete age assurance to update these default safety settings or access age-gated content and features.

Additional Protections for Teens
Discord has additional default protections in place for teen users, including:
- Direct messages from unknown users, including adults, are filtered by the Message Request feature and teen users cannot disable Message Requests (users must be confirmed adults via one of Discord's methods of age assurance).
- Safety alerts when interacting with unfamiliar accounts
- Stricter content filters
- Family Center, which lets parents and guardians stay connected to their teen’s Discord activity
