Fix Your Stuff (or ALLOW CUSTOM CLIENTS) (or BOTH)
(This is a repost due to my previous post being automodded)
As a company that values accessibility at least a little, (or I can assume so, given by the fact you have an accessibility form and whole accessibility topic on this very feedback page), the new design changes really suck to see!
I will preface this by saying that before this update, I have been generally happy in regards to accessibility on Discord. I feel that, so far, the Discord staff have done their best to make Discord more accessible to more users, and that has been great to see.
However, this design has been not so great to see.
My first and main complaint is about the wretched colour scheme. The previous blurple was perfect; it was subtle and light, and most importantly, DID NOT CAUSE USERS EYE STRAIN. Even on this feedback page, see this screenshot of it:
This new blue is WAY too aggressive and saturated and causes eye strain for many. Just TAKE A LOOK at your home page. There is no way you saw this and thought this looked MORE FRIENDLY rather than less.
See this image of the home page in its current state:
See this image of how it was previously:
See this image of how it was before that even:
This is a big regression when it comes to accessibility. When your HOME PAGE is causing EYE STRAIN for users, you have messed up big time.
Even the little things; the reaction buttons are WAY TOO BRIGHT. See this little screenshot of a chat:
The FIRST THING that sticks out to you is AMONGUS because of this BRIGHT, AGGRESSIVE reaction button that sticks out like a sore thumb. The bright background and super saturated-blue border means this is a horror to try and read through; NOT EVEN just for those with disabilities. I have NO idea what made you guys think this was a good idea.
I cannot even BEGIN to imagine being dyslexic and trying to read this hideous font. As someone WITHOUT dyslexia, this text is almost IMPOSSIBLE TO READ. See this screenshot of the billing section tab (that includes some of that very beloved very bright blue below)
Additionally, your green now has less blue, which makes it MUCH more difficult for those who are red/green colourblind to distinguish it from red. Just LOOK at the comments on this post, which are all expressing that sentiment.
You can also just OPEN DEVTOOLS and see that these colours are not really accessible:
I am almost CERTAIN there is more in this design update to cover, but my point has been MADE already. This rebranding is NOT GOOD; it sucks for accessibility and had NO PURPOSE.
Here's a couple of solutions for you guys!!
1. REVERT THE CHANGES! There are MUCH LESS complaints when it comes to accessibility on the previous colours & fonts, and the changes were COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. REVERT THEM! FIX YOUR STUFF! Almost NOBODY is happy with them, and your SILENCE on anything but positive comments has been extremely upsetting.
2. ALLOW CUSTOM CLIENTS! Seriously. This would not be as big an issue if you guys didn't BAN USERS for using custom clients, whether it be accessibility reasons or just for personal preference. You guys will never appeal to everybody with a design. This is a GREAT way to do that.
3. BOTH! This would be the solution in a perfect world. Revert your changes and allow custom clients.
I UNDERSTAND that this is not a perfect world; there may weird legal reasons for why you guys disallow custom clients. At least REVERT YOUR CHANGES, please.

Thank you for compiling everything on this! I recommend sharing this on other social media as a call-to-action. There’s already a lot of threads here, but they’re obviously not listening when it’s just in their forums.

oh yeah, note: they haven't been completely silent on the issue, but they still haven't reverted the changes, so i'm still upset about this

ktiy — “Discord’s new design choices are completely inaccessible for many people and they’re trying to restrict our outcry to their forums to hide it from the public. Here’s a compilation of how it harms people, share it wherever you can!” and a link to the post wherever you can post it?
The point is, as stated, to get this gaining traction in places other than Discord’s own forums and thread on Twitter.

Thank you!! This is well-put-together. I do hope Discord will make some changes because I imagine these complaints will go on much longer than just a week. I would like to continue to support Discord, but they must realize quickly that there are people in the community that want these changes so it doesn't negatively impact their experience while using Discord.

YES. THIS, THIS EXACTLY!

by the way, i've made a thread on this on my main account; you can see it here:

This is perfect. Thank you :)

This sums up almost all of my frustration in one constrictively made post. well done dude.

I appreciate that you have actual evidence and details instead of just "New color ugly! >:(". Blue is naturally a more intense color, and when put with the dark background of dark mode, it can really strain people's eyes. This update really had no purpose, no one was complaining about how things were before. I've seen people say that everyone will stop complaining and accept it after a while, but that's not because we'd be okay with it, it'd be because complaining at a brick wall has no purpose. I wish they'd stop being so anal about things like BetterDiscord since that way users can have things work how they want, and as long as Discord and the BetterDiscord properly manage things it can end up being just as safe while still as versatile.
Really is sad to see how poorly they're running things and completely ignoring the criticism and backlash of their UI updates. No one complains when they add features or fix bugs after all, it's just the cruddy UI we hate.12 -
ThatOneInternetGuy Yeah, this is really disappointing to see, especially considering this was an unnecessary and unwanted change.
My best guess is that they had hired a permanent designer rather than say a freelance one, and had to give them something to do.6 -
I don't have any significant issues with colors or eyestrain but looking at this hurts. The new green confuses my eyes and rather than drawing them it pushes my gaze away and the new blue does the same. It's overwhelming and uncomfortable to look at. I do have issues with reading and I've noticed myself struggling to read my friend's messages a lot more than I previously had. I don't notice it in the moment and can't pick out any specific things that mess me up, but what has been frequently happening is I'll initially read a message one way and then if I read it over again a few hours later I'll notice that I've read a word wrong or in the wrong order. I couldn't tell you if it's because of the font change, but like I said, this happened very rarely previous to the change and now it's almost a daily occurance.

I think the old blurple was easy on the eyes and worked very well. I was fond of it. The new one is quite saturated by comparison - why fix it if it wasn't broken?

(Not) funny part is, alot of developers are on the spectrum, so it makes me wonder if the developers were even involved in the decision or testing. Heck, I doubt the designer looked at this color change for more than a minute.
