Multilanguage (CJK) Font Support
Discord uses the correct fallback fonts in each language's style sheet when the client is set to the respective language. However, with the client set to English, Discord does not define the font used for glyphs outside of the Whitney font (or the English fallback fonts listed: Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial). For CJK characters, this causes the operating system to display the glyphs using its default fonts, which is fine in macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. On Windows, depending on the languages and fonts active, it can lead to a jarring display of text.
Using my system as an example (English, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese are active), Han-unified characters (hanzi from Chinese and kanji from Japanese) are displayed with the font SimSun, an outdated Simplified Chinese bitmap font. Kana are displayed with Meiryo, an antialiased Japanese font. This is especially problematic with Japanese text, as both fonts will be used within the same sentence. For example: "Skype、TeamSpeakの時代は終わりを告げた…！"
- Skype, TeamSpeak displayed using Whitney (as intended)
- の, は, わり, を, げた displayed using Meiryo
- 時代, 終, 告 displayed using SimSun (時 and 終 are not even Simplified Chinese characters)
To solve this problem, Discord could implement a language list that users can set and prioritize (like most operating systems and web browsers). Or better yet, use the list set in the operating system. This way, unavailable glyphs from the first language font fallback list will resort to the list of the subsequent languages.
Another simpler approach is appending a pan-CJK font to the list in the English stylesheet, such as Arial Unicode MS. This is the approach that YouTube captions have used in the past (but has now changed to use the language-specific font specified in the browser). However, a catchall font is not as good of a solution as above because this cannot account for character variations on the same codepoint. For example, 雇 (U+96C7) and 骨 (U+9AA8) are written differently in the 3 languages mentioned but have the same codepoint and rely on the language-specific font to differentiate them.

As someone who uses Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese on a daily basis, I really hope this gets implemented. I find it painful to see the mix of different fonts on Windows.
On Android, the fallback font is universal sans-serif font so it's not as painful as on Windows.

for me i just use discord on chrome and set the fonts to hiragino sans

Holy hell, you have to change this. The Japanese kanji font (SimSun) is so chopstick-y that it feels almost racist reading the chat.

astrum's idea of configuring our own fallback fonts is simple from a user's perspective, and would be relatively easy to implement, as well. If a user is bothered enough by this font issue, they'll be motivated enough to look through Discord's settings, at the very least. All it takes is picking a font or two, which is orders of magnitude easier than messing with Linked Fonts in Windows.
Why SimSun? When the SimSun characters are large, they're out of place with all the serifs. When they're small, they're so bitmappy and crunched together, it's headache-inducing to try and read anything.
I can't believe this still hasn't been fixed.

Fix this discord! Chinese characters are ATROCIOUS on discord. They are so pixelated and ugly. so hard to read.

The ugly SimSun is still not fixed in 2021...
So SimSun is essentially a serif font and it works weirdly with sans-serif fonts. I use other electron-based apps, like Notion, and they fixed the CJK font problems last year, changing it from SimSun to Microsoft Yahei. I wonder why the dev team of Discord is unable to make a similar modification.

Adding in my support for this. It's really annoying to have to change the entire locale or use Discord on Chrome because we can't customize the fonts and SimSun is awful for proper kanji readability.

The SimSun issue is resolved on my desktop after an update. Finally...🥲
