Onboarding has bad UX (Lots of detail in this post)
Every time I join a server with onboarding, particularly if I already know what I want to do in that community (such as a support server), I hate when the onboarding window pops up and takes up the entire screen. I have to wait for all the animations to finish, choose what is often a bunch of superficial roles, and select from a few channels (A "Show All Channels" button would be helpful here) before *finally* gaining access to the server.
It just feels like a slow, tedious, and painful process on joining a server, replacing the quick and snappy feel of joining a server without onboarding. Welcome menus were nice. They just showed up for a bit, and you could still see the server in the background, giving a gentle indication to the user that they can just click the background to skip the welcome menu.
The only thing I like about onboarding so far is selecting your own roles at the top of the channel list. I think that's a super useful feature but I wish you could enable it without enabling the tedious rest of onboarding. I don't want to annoy my joining members just to add a fancy role-picker that can easily be replaced by any number of bots.
I think that if Onboarding was made less infuriating (a quicker experience) and/or a skip option was added, that would make a huge difference. I also think that if users could see the discord server in the background while they join, it would feel better. To me, when instead of the familiar look of a Discord server, I am greeted by a screen-wide span of blurple corporate art, I feel, subconsciously, like I'm being locked out of or shunned from the server. It increases the effort required to join. And, as I'm sure we can all guess, more effort leads to lower member retention, which is a problem every single onboarding or verification system needs to face.
TL;DR: Onboarding is accomplishing the exact opposite of what it was intended to do. Its UI is tedious to go through, and needs a rework to be less claustrophobic, faster-feeling, and maybe a skip button.

I completely agree with your suggestion to improve the onboarding process on Discord. As someone who frequently joins new servers, I can relate to the frustration of having to go through a slow and tedious process, especially when I'm already familiar with the community or its purpose.
The idea of making the onboarding experience quicker and less obtrusive is a fantastic one, and I believe it would greatly enhance the overall user experience. Adding a "skip" option or making the onboarding window less intrusive by allowing users to see the server in the background would definitely make the process feel more welcoming and less intimidating.
Moreover, the ability to enable only certain features of onboarding, such as the role-picker, without having to go through the entire process would be an excellent addition. This would give server owners more flexibility in customizing the onboarding experience for their members.
In conclusion, I support your call for a rework of the onboarding UI to make it faster, more user-friendly, and customizable. By doing so, Discord would undoubtedly improve member retention and satisfaction, making it a more enjoyable platform for everyone.
