Linux desktop client: Moving mouse over server icons is very laggy
Running Ubuntu 21.04, AMD Radeon RX550, Ryzen 5 3600, 16 gig RAM
Using the latest official desktop client.
Steps to reproduce: Move the mouse pointer up and down over the server list.
Noted behaviour: The animations are very laggy and there's very high CPU load in multiple cores/threads.
I'm not sure but I don't think it was like this before the most recent update.
-
yeah it definitely wasn't like this before the update. It's extremely laggy in a way that makes it harder to use now, especially if you have a long server list and need to scroll to switch between servers that are high and low on the list.

Same here, i'm running Debian GNU/Linux 11.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (8) @ 2.000GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 460/560D / Pro 450/455/460There's another post which describes the same behavior: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/4409296010775-Suddenly-Sluggish

This is certainly an issue with Discord version 0.0.16. I'm experiencing major performance issues on fully-updated Arch Linux, using an AMD Ryzen 7 4750U (using the integrated graphics).
Version 0.0.15 is completely free of this issue.5 -
Same here, it's happening since the last update
I'm using Manjaro Linux 21.1.3, Intel HD Graphics 620 (open-source Mesa driver), Intel Core i3 7100U4 -
Same on my machine, latest Discord Update.
I'm using Garuda Linux (Arch-Distro) with a AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and a AMD Radeon RX580 8GB4 -
@ discord team: So do ya'll just not even test the linux version of discord at all? cos this seems like a really obvious bug, I mean it's like literally the first thing you click on after opening discord to check out what's going on in servers and stuff

Same issue on windows 10. Intel i7 7700k, 1080ti
At first I thought it was the new game ready driver for nvidia, but now that i've found this thread, I'm confident that the last discord update broke some stuff

it's still broken btw.

BUMP
5 -
it's still broken.
5 -
it's still broken.
3 -
still broken.
3 -
Yep, this is still a problem. Come on Discord Team, the least you can do is acknowledge that this is an issue.
4 -
still broken. it's so laggy that it often doesn't register mouse clicks when I'm trying to switch servers. this is ridiculous
4 -
I am still waiting for a fix
4 -
If they continue to do so, they will soon have one less customer. Switching to a Open plattform is probaly one way or another a better idea.

It's still broken.
Considering cancelling my nitro subscription
2 -
yep im on the same page with you, about to cancel nitro as well :=)
Still waiting for their:
oopsie woopsie, we made an oopsie doopsie. We will fix it in an instant!2 -
Still broken after today's update

still broken

this is no good... I can't believe it... it's still broken...

So here's my experience as a Linux user on discord:
* For over a year it'd randomly crash when doing voice calls, that only stopped happening very recently, my friends had to get used to me suddenly 'hanging up' and then rejoining and being like "hehe sorry.. sorry... my discord crashed..."
1 -
* even after the random crashing stopped being a thing, during voice calls, it'd slowly start lagging more and more until it eventually would freeze up, my friends had to get used to me saying "hehe sorry.... I need to restart my discord..." like every 30 minutes. That only stopped being a thing very recently.
2 -
* screen sharing doesn't support sound on anything other than windows so I have to resort to tricky hacks to share sound when I stream a game to someone.
1 -
and now:
* the server list, the most obvious fundamental feature that's like the first thing you click on after starting discord, is slow as molassses and 'loses' mouse clicks and is painful to use because it's lagging so much... on a really decent 6 core 12 thread computer with decent fast graphics card and up to date drivers and everything
so it's been over two weeks of the server list being nearly unusable now

Yep, version 0.0.16 still has awful performance. I've been using 0.0.15 since the broken update was released, but I doubt that version will work forever.
Is there a better way to get in touch with the dev team? They either haven't seen any of the threads on this issue, or they don't care enough to address it, so I think we need to actually get into direct contact.
1 -
Same I reverted back to 0.0.15 and now it's working fine.
Discord forces you to update to the latest version or it won't launch, you can check this old thread to see how to prevent that :

Still broken.
And yeah I'm really disappointed with discord's response to this issue.
https://twitter.com/discord/status/1448334464048934921
Got a reply on twitter basically saying "submit a support request at dis.gd/contact ", so I did that. A bit over a day after that I get a generic template email reply saying "oh we're terribly sorry! please check this common issues list to see if it helps your issue". It just feels like they didn't even read the report.
Also I am pretty certain after all this that Discord do barely any testing, especially not for the linux version.

And it's still broken btw.

I've noticed something that might help diagnose this bug.
It seems like upon starting discord, the lag isn't immediately there, instead it seems to develop and get a bit worse for every new/unique server icon you hover the mouse over.
Check this video I just recorded:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/779762092290211881/900764686335742052/2021-10-21_16-15-24.mkv
Notice that the mouseover animation starts off pretty smooth. Then once I move the mouse over a few different server icons, it gets a little bit laggier, and as I move it over even more icons, it gets laggier still. But it has to be unique/new icons that the mouse hasn't get hovered over - doing it over the same icon a few times doesn't increase the lag.
I'd really appreciate if the discord team could give this issue some attention
