Message Threads
SlutförtHi Discord Team and dear reader!
This would be a feature request for Message Threads, like we can see on Slack.
As a matter of fact, when sending messages in a crowded channel (+15ppl) conversations can easily get lost in the mix. Message threads solve this issue by creating a "sub-channel" on the message that initiated the thread, allowing participants to continue their conversation without spamming the main channel and allowing other users to do the same.
Thanks a lot,
loving Discord!

uuuup :) Most important thing ever ! We can't afford to open a chan for each single discussion. Thanks a lot.

...Welp...looks like iMessages is going to beat Discord to the threaded replies... (https://www.macrumors.com/2020/06/22/ios-14-imessage-features/). Really hoping to see Discord implement this soon, it's so critical for conversation cleanliness/organization!
2 -
Even iMessage is doing it now. With all the great features Discord has this one is a glaring hole.
2 -
Definitely looking for threads also. Adding in the "all unreads" and "threads" like slack would be baller too. If they were added as boost features they could be monetized and I would pay for them.
2 -
Was really hoping there was some dev reply in here, or some movement on the feature. But it doesn't look like it.
Please can we have threads now? :D
1 -
^^ It seems devs are ignoring us, this is a pretty big topic
3 -
Devs are not ignoring. They specifically said they won't comment either way on this feature. They are not making any promises as it hasn't been decided if this will happen and they won't say anything until it's ready for release.
2 -
I moved my community to Guilded because Discord devs don't care.
So many people here we are asking for a simple thing and in return they ignoring us.
No answer after so many comments.2 -
This is literally the only reason why I'm still using Slack.
The people want threading! It's SUCH an important feature!3 -
Yeah this is literally the top feature many people I know and myself personally want for Discord. This would be so nice.

I think this needs to be an option for text channels. You can maybe keep how messages are currently displayed or change to a threaded option. Some channels are better for threads, others aren't, depending on the text or information displayed. Highly upvote this.

+1 For Threads
Of all the features Discord could possibly implement with their current backlog, **Threads are both Urgent and Important with the significant move to WFH due to lockdown and other shifts to async communication**.
The delay in launching Threads suggests some possible options:
1. They are either working on Threads right now. (If they have component Project Managers, I 100% believe they would prioritize threads right now)
2. There is some technical debt in their infrastructure that would make implementing threads difficult and hasn't been prioritized.
3. There is some other feature that their internal data suggests is more important.
4. They are spread thin and don't have the capacity to implement right now.
5. Reliability issues in the past have made them deprioritize a number of new features until their services/infrastructure is more reliable.
Credit where credit is due, they have launched some awesome features as of late, and have like 70 or so engineers and the world has shifted so much and they may need to re-prioritize a lot. Also, they recently migrated a bunch of services from Go to Rust.
Just adding some extra context from an outsider's opinion who works in the industry. I'd bet money Threads get launched this year tho.4 -
6. Some people don't want message threads, as I've seen in a few comments on here, and there may be some higher-up manager at Discord who also doesn't want threads and somehow believes the opinion of the minority outweighs that of the vast majority of users, and is therefore blocking the development team from implementing it. (I've seen this many times before)
Comment on 3: They must be looking in the wrong spot if that's the case. Although message threads are not the most upvoted feature request, it is the top 5 I believe, and it is #1 in regards to the number of comments.
Some combination of #2 and #4 is most likely.
The fact that they just switched backend languages makes #4 likely as the engineers are probably working on other behind the scenes tickets.
#2 is likely because another highly requested feature is the ability to add a custom theme (which has also sat unimplemented for over 2 years now) even though a custom theme feature is relatively simple to implement if you keep all of your colors centralized in a colors constant file, and make that file pull non-default values from the database, and make those values editable through a UI interface in the settings. If they had all of their colors centralized, then building the frontend to make it editable and post to the db should really only take an engineer one shift. I'm not including review times, or other theme customizations like fonts. Based on this, it is quite obvious that they have some significant technical debt.

Let's do this! Threads are life! I might be able to finally kill off my last Slack groups.
4 -
The one reason why I like Slack over Discord is the ability to reply in threads... please make this a feature.
3 -
>So now that you've committed to making discord a better place to hang with non-gamers, how about some love for this? :)
4 -
Total support for threading. Would very much like this in my server now that we've moved people there and it's getting busier. Would make it a lot less cluttered
2 -
Threads are the only thing standing between discord being far better than slack and the best option even for businesses to use. Until then, I am going to have to stick with slack.
2 -
Yeah with the latest announcement of broadening discord communities beyond just gaming focus... it's time... it's way overdue, but now the time is right. Let's see threads!!!!
4 -
This will help a lot ..agree with the new features
1 -
Can't wait to get this feature! This would be very helpful for catching up on conversations as one topic normally spins off into several others.

To everyone saying Discord is ignoring this request, please see https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/h98frk/help_discord_be_better_message_threads_important/
They have acknowledged it is being explored.
3 -
I work for a software company. This comment means nothing. Even a roadmap with a quarter comment would mean little. Oh yeah... Q4.... *doesn't happen for 2 years*
Better than no acknowledgement. I'm sure, but seriously Discord. I would pay monthly for this.

AWESOME! Amazing to see it's finally getting some love. I really really really hope they give this a fair shot during development and don't kill the feature before it ships to public.
2 -
That's amazing. Thank you to the Discord staff :)
1 -
Per their message, it might never ship. But what they've come up with looks really promising already. While not necessary, I like their idea of giving the thread a topic title so you can easily skim through all the side convos happening in a channel - presumably like a sub-channel list. Hope it's optional though. So many threads I've seen in Slack are just one or two comments that were irrelevant to the main discussion feed; just little asides that don't warrant getting named.
3 -
My faith in discord has been restored, thanks guys for considering this feature!
2 -
I strongly agree
