The whole point of Better Discord being against the ToS is so Discord doesnt let you modify the client in any way. Doing this would basically be violating their own ToS.

This would be a fantastic addition to give servers more flair and be more thematic

How about not custom CSS and just changeable colors?

How would CSS create vulnerabilities? It's just a markup language or in other words a "language" for designing web pages.

The only reason I used better Discord was to use a custom theme and it's relatively easy to design your own. Other mainstream gamer applications like Steam already allow themes.

I'm not sure how Javascript works but if there is any concern about using actual code in themes, then you could make an official review system where you have to submit the theme including the CSS/Javascript, it gets reviewed, then its approved and users can get it on the Discord Theme Selection. This is what Fandom does as you are able to completely change the wiki and add your own code but it has to be approved first.

For more of a incentive for Discord to add this, they could make the "Theme Store" nitro exclusive so that more people would buy nitro to have themes. It would be like paying for cosmetics in a game. A lot of people would disagree with this idea but it's better than not having themes at all in my opinion so make it happen discord

This is one of those features that doesn't really get noticed but could be really great, if implemented correctly. I think it would also be nice to be able to download a template incase you only wanted to make minor adjustments. Would this change icons or just background?

    Basically translated from this frequest.
`can discord provide for custom css (and/or js)`

The .js theme offers some "malicious" features I think it will be difficult to create discord

Manually changing code is another violation of the Terms of Service. I'm sure alternate themes are a highly requested thing that the Discord developers know about.

I would love to have themes for discord. It needs more attention. The current colors and UI are very boring now.

Trust me, the regular Discord look is the best you could ask for. If you think it's too dark try using light mode (Settings -> Appearances) or adjusting your brightness.

This question was asked before, so I'll tell you the same thing: Trust me when I say this, but the normal discord themes are better than anything else (from my experience). It would be interesting but probably a wasted effort.

    Hi There,

Could you elaborate more on this please? Do you mean something like Custom Themes for the discord client or are you referencing server customisation?

    Kind Regards,

  • what we want as a community is an easy way to change the css so that we can, change the size of assets, move them, recolor them, add background images and generally anything else you could use css for in regards to creating a custom theme all your own on discord.

we want a way to do this, to save and share these custom themes and we want a way to do this native and safely in such a way that we can save and load themes on demand.

i know this is not a tall order and there is already a program that exists that references exactly what we want to be able to do, that plugin is called stylish.

now for everyone that is not a discord admin, if u wanna do custom themes please check out stylish, a plugin for your browser, it will allow you to customize the website based version of discord however you please in a way that is 100% safe and it includes literally everything you are all asking for in one neat little package.

  • let me iterate with a second post, since after reading all this ppls are still not understanding

we the community of discord demand the ability to make and save local changes to css related to the appearance of discord only, we want these changes to be local, so only we the user can see them and we want to be able to share them in a way where in the options we could select them from a drop down list.

if you cannot or do not have the ability or desire to implement this feature please say so in your response, as i will gladly take it upon myself to create a "local only" css loader for discord that includes these features.

As a member of the community, I would like to reinforce my stance. I am not in favor of providing direct access to Discord's css, nor an option to share this css. All I personally want, is an option to provide a background to members.
Providing access to code limits potential, as backwards compatibility now needs to be guaranteed, and running any arbitrary code is a recipe for exploitation (there is a well known keylogger you can write in pure css for example).

then unfortunately i will be creating a css loader that will be able to apply themes in such a way that discord staff will be unable to tell that any change has even been made, this is something i already do. i will repackage it for use for all and release it if your unwilling to release a safe to use theme editing option.

also for others wanting "access to discord" its ctrl+shift+i and i can do all the things your warning about right now as is without any special theme loader using only the default discord, any changes you make to css script in the ctrl+shift+i window, will apply instantly.

instead we are asking for a way to make custom css themes safely, because atm we can already do this, its just a pain to manually copy and paste a custom discord gui and skin/theme pack.

once again i would prefer to have a discord staff either explain why not considering whatever your security related concerns related to this are because as it stands those security issues still exist in the present default unedited form of discord and atleast this way, you could have some measure of control in regards to the content being effected by a css.

from what I know, CSS can't really do anything besides visual stuff. The plugin you're taking about CJ is a JSON script anyways.

we do not want any form of java to be able to be added to any custom theme file in anyway.

theme.css files are not able to harm anyone at all so please create a simple way for us to share and modify the dark or light theme pack so we can release them.

Actually it's entirely possible to make keylogger in pure css, Although it is unoptimized amd really narrowly targetted https://bytescout.com/blog/css-keylogger.html also a y sort of modification to discord client is obviously against ToS and can end with account termination
Yes editing css even through plugins like stylish or via developer tools count as ToS violation

I did not realize how much of a nerve this would strike. Either way, I'm not "trolling", this is a legitimate concern. CSS can absolutely go beyond visuals. Especially when you take advantage of url (and calc, FANCY) which can send web requests and is required to display an image.
I would be fine with css, if only whitelisted attributes and rule types could be supplied and third-party theme source code was displayed before it was installed. But that would just satisfy me, dont forget, Discord has users who click links just because they dont recognize them. They won't know not to run arbitrary code on their computers. And they will absolutely bother support if their keys get stolen.
