How do I Boost a Server?
If you're still on the fence of which server you want to boost, just remember that while you can move your boost from one server to another, there's just a 7 day cool-down period to make that change.
So you’re ready to boost your favorite server? Let’s go over on how to do so!
Choose your servers wisely and follow these steps below.
1. Once you’re sure about the server you’d like to boost, navigate to that server.
2. Tap on the server name in the top left corner and then tap on Server Boost from the dropdown menu.
3. Then tap on Boost This Server. If you have any unused Server Boosts, you’ll then receive a pop-up to proceed with boosting the server. If you do not have any available Server Boosts, you’ll receive a pop-up in order to purchase a Server Boost.
4. Follow the prompts to complete applying your Server Boost(s) to the server. Once finished, you’ll receive a final pop-up that says your boost has been activated.
How do Additional Perks Work?
Here’s a quick summary of how additional perks work in servers:
- Cost: 3 Boosts per perk
- Independent from server level perks
- Need Boosts that are not allocated to server level perks
- Can only be enabled and configured on the Discord desktop app
- Disabled immediately if Boosts are removed from the perk
Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles are additional server perks that can be unlocked independently from your server level. Unlike the bundled perks that come with each server level, additional perks are specific enhancements for your server that you can unlock with available Server Boosts—no specific level required!
How Do I Apply Server Boosts to Additional Perks
1. With the correct server selected, select the Server Boosts tab in the upper-left corner. This tab is only visible to admins of the server.

2. In the upper-right, you’ll see how many Server Boosts are available and recent activity of Server Boosts.

3. You can apply your available Server Boosts to any of the available additional perks by pressing on Enable Perk.

How Do Server Boosts Work for Levels vs Additional Perks?
Your server's Server Boosts can now be strategically allocated in two ways:
- For server levels: Boosts that count toward your server's level progression (2, 7, or 14)
- For additional perks: Separate allocations of 3 Boosts per perk
This means if your server has 10 total Boosts, you could:
- Use 7 for Level 2 and 3 for one additional perk [NEW]
- Use 2 for Level 1 and 6 for two additional perks (3 each)
- Use 7 for Level 2 and save up for more Boosts to get to Level 3 later
When new Boosts are added to your server, they're automatically applied toward server levels whenever you have enough Boosts for the next level. Boosts must be manually applied to additional perks on the Discord desktop app. Server owners and admins can reallocate Boosts between levels and perks at any time through the Server Boosts tab on desktop. However, keep in mind:
- Moving Boosts away from your level requirements will cause you to lose those level perks after the grace period
- Moving Boosts away from additional perks will immediately disable those perks
- You need enough total Boosts to maintain both your desired level AND any additional perks you want active
How to maintain your Boosting Streak
If you are also switching your purchase from desktop to mobile or vice versa, you have 72 hours to manually reactivate your Server Boosts in order to not lose your streak.
Your Server Boosting Badge and streak is based on the length of time that you have been boosting a server. Regardless of how many servers you boost, the length of your streak is dependent on the oldest applied server boost(s). You can see your boosting streak by tapping on your avatar icon to reveal your user profile and hovering over your Server Boosting badge.
You can lose your boosting streak for any of the following reasons:
- You cancel your Server Boost(s)
- Your Nitro (with 2 included Server Boosts) or your Server Boost(s) subscription has ended
- The server you have been boosting has been deleted
- You’ve been removed from the server by an admin or moderator
How do I Transfer my Server Boosts?
If you accidentally Boosted the wrong server, or you just want to move your Boost, you can easily transfer your Server Boost to another server! Just keep in mind, if you move your Boost to another server, the original server might lose a server Boost level or additional perks if those Boosts were allocated to maintain them. Here’s how to transfer your Boost.
1. Tap on cogwheel next to your Discord username to access your User Settings.
2. Next, navigate to the Server Boost tab.
3. Here you should see the current servers that your Server Boosts are applied to. Tap on the 3 dots next to the Server Boost that you want to move, and then tap on Transfer Boost.
4. You can either search for the name of the server you want to transfer the boost to, or you can tap on Transfer here if you see the server in the list. In order for a server to show up in the list, you must be a member of the server.
5. Now just tap on Yes, Transfer Boost to transfer the Server Boost.
6. Finally you’ll see a confirmation message stating it has been transferred successfully.
Server Owner/Admin View Of Server Boosts
If someone uses a Server Boost on your server, and you have the option enabled, you’ll see a message in your designated text channel that states someone has boosted the server.
If you're the server owner or have Manage Server permissions, you'll be able to select which channel the Server Boosting message will appear in, or toggle this option on/off within the Overview section in your Server Settings. Here’s how:
1. Navigate to the server you own or have Manage Server Permissions in, and then tap on the server name in the top-left corner of the app.
2. Tap on Server Settings and then under Overview, scroll down until you see System Messages Channel.
3. Here you can change where the system message is sent to and can also enable or disable Send a message when someone boosts this server.
Managing Your Server's Boosts and Perks
As a server owner or admin with Manage Server permissions, you'll have access to the new Server Boosts tab at the top of your channel list. This powerful management interface lets you:
- View your total available Boosts and how they're currently allocated
- See your server's current level and active perks
- Enable new perks if you have available Boosts
- Reallocate Boosts between levels and additional perks as needed
- Configure settings for Enhanced Role Styles and Server Tags once enabled
If you’re the server owner or have Manage Server permissions within the server, you’ll also be able to go behind the scenes and head into the Server Boost Status tab in your Server Settings and see:
- Your server’s current level + perks
- How many people blessed the server with Boosts
- And how many more Boosts you need before your server reaches the next level
Grace Periods for Server Boost Loss
If your server is running low on Server Boosts and loses a level, the server will be able to keep the perks for a grace period of 72 hours. After 72 hours, the perks (such as the server banner and extra emojis) will not be fully removed from the server, but will become temporarily invalid until the level is regained.
However, the Custom Invite Link will be lost and become available to other servers after 30 days.
Unlike level perks which have a grace period, additional perks like Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles are disabled immediately when their required Boosts are removed or reallocated. If your server is losing Boosts, you can use the Server Boosts tab to prioritize which perks to keep active with your remaining Boosts.

FAQs for Additional Perks
Q: What are ‘additional perks’ and how are they different from Levels?
A: Additional perks are new features you can unlock directly with Boosts, separate from your server's Boost Level. Currently, there are two available: Enhanced Role Styles (which add gradient and holographic effects to roles) and Server Tags (4-character identifiers members can display on their profiles across Discord). Unlike traditional server levels, these perks can be unlocked individually without reaching specific level thresholds.
Q: How much do the new additional perks cost?
A: Enhanced Role Styles and Server Tags each cost 3 Boosts. If you want both perks, you'll need 6 Boosts total (3 for each perk).
Q: Are additional perks replacing the current server level system?
A: No, this supplements the existing level system. All current server level perks (emoji slots, file upload limits, etc.) remain exactly the same. This new system simply gives you additional ways to use your Boosts for targeted perks without affecting your server's level progression.
Q: Do additional perks use separate Boosts from my server level?
A: Yes, Boosts used for additional perks are dedicated specifically to those perks and don't count toward your server's level progression. Similarly, Boosts allocated to your server level can't be used for additional perks. You'll need separate Boosts for each - so if you want Enhanced Role Styles, you need 3 Boosts just for that perk, plus whatever Boosts you want to maintain your current server level.
Q: What happens to my additional perks if my server loses Boosts?
A: Perks require ongoing Boost allocation to remain active. If your server drops below the required number of Boosts for a perk, that perk will be disabled. Enhanced Role Styles will revert to solid colors, and Server Tags will be removed from members' profiles. Server owners/admins can choose which perks to maintain if Boost counts drop.
Q: Why can't I unlock perks even though I have enough Boosts?
A: Make sure you're accessing the Server Boost tab (visible only to server owners/admins) and that your Boosts are "available" rather than already allocated to your server level. Only server members with admin permissions can unlock additional perks. You need to have enough unallocated Boosts to enable additional perks.
Q: I just added 3 Boosts to my server for an additional perk, but I can't enable it. Why aren't my Boosts available?
A: When you add new Boosts to your server, they're automatically applied toward server levels whenever you have enough for the next level. This means your Boosts might have triggered an automatic level upgrade, making them unavailable for additional perks. To free up those Boosts for additional perks, you'll need to disable the level.
Q: Can I move Boosts between levels and perks after I've allocated them?
A: Yes, server owners and admins can reallocate Boosts between server levels and additional perks through the Server Boosts tab. However, if you move Boosts away from a perk, that perk will be disabled until you allocate enough Boosts back to it.
Q: Are additional perks a one-time purchase, or do they require ongoing Boosts?
A: Each additional perk requires an ongoing allocation of its required Boosts to stay active, just like levels. If your server drops below the required number of Boosts, the perk will be disabled until the necessary Boosts are reallocated.
Q: Can I purchase and manage additional perks from both desktop and mobile?
A: Additional perks can currently only be purchased and configured on desktop.
