Every Discord server is a Friend, Community, or Discoverable Server, depending on how it's used and how people can find and join it. This article explains each server type and how badges like Partnered and Verified fit in.

What are the types of Discord servers?

Friend, Community, and Discoverable server types describe how people can find and join a server:

Friend Server: Friend Servers are invite-only spaces designed to discuss, connect, and share with your friends or smaller groups.
Community Server: Community Servers are invite-only spaces designed for people to share, connect, and learn from others all over the world who share common interests. Moderators in Community Servers have access to tools like Server Insights, Raid Protection, Rules and Onboarding.
Discoverable Server: Discoverable Servers are Community Servers that meet extra requirements for size, safety, and activity, and whose admins have chosen to list them in Server Discovery. Anyone can find and join them without an invite, through Server Discovery, discord.com/servers, and web search. They also have their own Server Web Page, so people can learn about them before joining.

Becoming a Community Server

Friend Servers who wish to have access to Community features may opt in to become a Community Server at any time in server settings.

Becoming a Community Server does not mean that anyone can find or join your server. Prospective members have to be sent an invite link. To support Community Server growth, invite links for Community Servers never expire.

Turning Off Community

Important: If your server is Discoverable, disabling Community also turns off Discoverability automatically.

1. Open Server Settings.

2. Under the Community category, select Overview.

3. Select Disable Community at the bottom of the page.

Becoming a Discoverable Server

Community Servers that meet our eligibility criteria (including a 1,000+ member minimum, active engagement, safety checks, and two-factor authentication for moderators) can choose to become a Discoverable Server. Eligibility criteria may be updated over time, and servers are expected to continue meeting them to remain Discoverable.

Becoming a Discoverable Server means your server can be found and joined by people who haven't received an invite, including people searching the web for what your community talks about.

Turning Off Discoverability

If you'd rather your server not be Discoverable, you can turn this off at any time.

1. Open Server Settings.

2. Select Access.

3. Turn off Discoverable.

Turning off Discoverability reverts your server to a Community Server. This means:

Your server can no longer be found through Server Discovery or discord.com/servers.
Your server web pages are taken down. Search engines may take some time to remove it from their results.
Prospective members will need an invite link to join, same as any Community Server.

You can turn Discoverability back on at any time, as long as your server still meets the eligibility criteria.

Server Badges

Your server's badge reflects its server type: Community or Discoverable. If your server also holds Partnered or Verified status, that badge takes priority and displays instead, with the tooltip noting the underlying server type as well.

Like Server Boosting, Partnered and Verified status add recognition and perks, but they don't change your server type or who can find and join it. Learn more in Partnered vs. Verified Servers.

Servers that have Partnered and Verified status will receive the "Verified" badge, and the tooltip will denote both statuses.

Q: What's the difference between a server type and a badge like Partnered or Verified?

A: Your server type (Friend, Community, or Discoverable) describes how people can find and join your server, depending on size, safety, and activity. Partnered and Verified are separate statuses Discord grants to select servers on top of their type, such as official game servers.

Q: How do I know if my server is Discoverable?

A: Open Server Settings, select Access, and find the Discoverable setting. If it's turned on, your server is Discoverable. If you can't find it or turn it on, your server isn't Discoverable yet. Learn what's needed in Enabling Server Discovery.

Q: Will my server become Discoverable automatically?

A: No. Community Servers that meet the eligibility criteria can choose to become Discoverable. Verified servers automatically qualify as Discoverable Servers.

Q: What happens with badges if you're verified and partnered?

A: We'll display your Verified badge, and the tooltip will indicate that the server is Verified & Partnered.
